Dead Poets Society is a 1989 drama film directed by Peter Weir and written by Tom Schulman, who won an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay. The film stars Robin Williams as John Keating, an inspiring and unconventional English teacher at the conservative Welton Academy in 1959. The ensemble cast includes Robert Sean Leonard as Neil Perry, Ethan Hawke as Todd Anderson, Josh Charles as Knox Overstreet, Gale Hansen as Charlie Dalton, and Kurtwood Smith as Mr. Perry, Neil’s strict father. The story follows a group of students who, inspired by Keating’s passion for poetry and his motto “Carpe Diem” (Seize the Day), revive the secretive Dead Poets Society to explore literature, self-expression, and their personal aspirations. As they challenge societal expectations and the rigid conformity of their school, the film explores themes of individuality, creativity, and the conflict between passion and duty. Widely acclaimed, Dead Poets Society became a cultural touchstone and is remembered for its powerful performances, moving narrative, and the lasting impact of its central message about the transformative power of art and self-discovery.
