Kitty fondly reflects on her humble beginnings in Streator, IL, where she walked to grade and high school. She recounts the endeavors of her hardworking parents and reminisces about meeting her husband on the family farm, a union that blossomed into 56 years of marriage and the blessing of ten children. Today, the family farm stands as a testament to their enduring legacy, still in excellent condition after many years.
In a household with ten children, their home boasted four bedrooms, two bathrooms, and the luxury of running water, a rarity in those times. Family dinners were cherished moments gathered around a hand-built picnic table, sharing stories of the day's adventures and the chores that kept them busy on the farm.
Despite their modest beginnings, all ten children pursued higher education, with many attending the esteemed University of Illinois. Kitty fondly recalls multiple trips to Ireland and the joyous celebration of a surprise 100th birthday party, complete with a special gift from the Pope himself.
A passionate college basketball fan, Kitty's love for the sport led to remarkable experiences, including an invitation from Coach Izzo to sit with his mother at a Michigan State game and a signed ball from Coach Underwood. The Solon family name has become synonymous with Streator, IL, a testament to their enduring impact on the community.
