Head coach at Wake Forest for 28 years
On today’s show we welcome legendary Wake Forest head coach Jerry Haas who has been there for an incredible 28 years.
During this time he has been part of the development of so many great players
We had a wonderful discussion about the background to Jerry’s development as a player and a coach.
His uncle was former US Masters champion Bob Goalby and his brother Jay Haas holds the record of the most made cuts in PGA Tour
Jerry went on to play on the European Tour in the golden era of the likes of Ballesteros and Langer and then the PGA Tour
Much of the development of his game involved PLAYING the game on the golf course
It is clear from the conversation that Jerry still has an incredible passion and love for the game of golf
We discussed the importance of finding a way to get the ball around the course with what you have that day.
- How great players find ways of dealing with the inevitable poor shots and setbacks
- Learning course management from the great players
- Giving young players ownership of their game
- How a good coach gets a balanced view of a player’s game
- Dealing with the realities of the game
- Creating a very powerful learning environment
- The more you ‘give’ of yourself the more you will get from the game
- Being flexible as a coach to individual players requirements
- Knowing WHO you are as a golfer
- Developing people not just golfers
- The FOUR crucial moments in every round
