"Hansel and Gretel" is a German fairy tale collected by the Brothers Grimm and published in 1812 as part of Grimms' Fairy Tales.
However the story of Hansel and Gretel itself, was inspired by the Great Famine of 1315 to 1317 in Europe, causing a period of widespread cold weather and torrential rains to Europe, that infected livestock and food shortages. And as a result, this lead to murder, child abandonment, and even cannibalism.
