  • Ellen Greenberg Case Reopened: Pennsylvania DA Reviews New Evidence in 2011 Death
    Oct 4 2024
Nearly 14 years after the controversial death of Ellen Greenberg, found with 20 stab wounds in her Philadelphia apartment, the case is receiving renewed attention. The Chester County District Attorney’s office, which took over the case in 2022, is actively reviewing the investigation and could soon provide updates.

A spokeswoman for the Chester County DA’s office confirmed that detectives and attorneys are working on the case. "It’s all dependent on where our detectives are at in the investigation," Dana Moore said, noting that an update could come "in the coming weeks or months."

The case, initially ruled a homicide before being controversially changed to a suicide, has been surrounded by questions. A Pennsylvania woman, who identified herself as an amateur cold-case investigator, provided PennLive with new information. After reviewing hours of surveillance footage from the Venice Loft apartments in the Manayunk neighborhood, where Ellen lived, she claims to have identified a "mystery man" behaving suspiciously around the time of Ellen’s death.

The woman reported that the man, captured on video between 4 p.m. and 6:10 p.m., appeared “nervously bouncing around” before heading upstairs when Ellen’s fiancé, Sam Goldberg, was at the gym. She described seeing the man come downstairs with injuries, head to the bathroom, and later return with something large hidden under his clothes. Afterward, he picked up a swipe card dropped by Goldberg without examining it. "He didn’t look at it to see what it was, but he checked to see if anyone saw him," she told PennLive. This timeline and related images were turned over to the DA’s office two years ago.

Moore did not comment directly on this new evidence but emphasized, "Our detectives and attorneys have been on this case... Every lead – everything -- is being taken very seriously."

The Chester County DA’s investigation marks the first official review of the case since the Pennsylvania Attorney General’s office, under then-AG Josh Shapiro, completed an “exhaustive review” in 2022. Despite their efforts, which included new forensic analysis, the AG’s office ultimately handed off the case due to a conflict of interest.

For Ellen’s parents, Joshua and Sandee Greenberg, the AG’s review was insufficient. They have spent $700,000 on their own investigation, challenging the suicide ruling. Their fight for “Justice for Ellen” has led to two civil cases. One of these cases, now before the Pennsylvania Supreme Court, could set a precedent for families challenging manner of death rulings made by coroners.

The Greenbergs’ legal battle also includes allegations of a conspiracy between Philadelphia authorities to cover up what they believe was Ellen’s murder. "We hate to leave Harrisburg," Sandee told PennLive, explaining that financial pressures from their private investigation forced them to sell their home and relocate to Florida.

Ellen, a 27-year-old elementary school teacher, was found stabbed in the kitchen of her locked apartment during a snowstorm. Despite the severity of her injuries, Philadelphia detectives quickly classified her death as a suicide, and her apartment was never treated as a crime scene. The Philadelphia Medical Examiner initially ruled her death a homicide, only to change it to suicide months later without further explanation.

The Greenbergs hope the Chester County DA will bring the closure they’ve sought for over a decade, with Ellen’s mother stating, "We’re still fighting for our daughter."

  • Brian Walshe's Defense Team Questions Impartiality, Requests Documents in High-Profile Murder Case
    Oct 4 2024
Brian Walshe, accused of killing and dismembering his wife, Ana Walshe, is facing new developments in his murder trial as his defense team raises concerns about the impartiality of the investigation. Walshe’s attorneys are demanding access to documents from two other high-profile Massachusetts murder cases, citing potential bias from former Massachusetts State Trooper Michael Proctor, who led the investigation into both Walshe's and Karen Read's cases.

Walshe, 48, was arrested in January 2023 and indicted on multiple charges, including murder, misleading a police investigation, and improper conveyance of a human body. He remains in custody without bail as his legal team works to challenge aspects of the investigation. The defense team is particularly focused on Michael Proctor, the former state trooper who led the inquiry into Walshe’s case.

Proctor’s involvement in another high-profile case—the investigation into Karen Read—has come under scrutiny. Read is accused of striking her boyfriend, John O'Keefe, with her SUV and leaving him to die in a snowstorm. Proctor’s conduct in Read’s case, which ended in a mistrial, led to his suspension following testimony that revealed unprofessional behavior, including disparaging text messages about Read. During her trial, Proctor referred to Read as a “whack job” and used an expletive, later apologizing to the jury for his comments.
Citing this behavior, Walshe’s defense team is questioning whether Proctor may have held a similar bias against their client. “Proctor’s text messages about Karen Read reveal bias,” Walshe’s attorney, Larry Tipton, said during a recent hearing. “We want to ensure there was no bias in Brian Walshe’s case, and that’s why we’re requesting access to these documents.”

The defense has asked for a comprehensive list of records related to Proctor’s work, including his cellphone data, internet account details, and more than 3,000 pages from an ongoing federal investigation. Walshe’s team is also seeking documents tied to Proctor’s role in the investigation of Sandra Birchmore, another case where Proctor’s actions have come under scrutiny.

While Walshe’s lawyers have not found concrete evidence of police or prosecutorial misconduct so far, they are pushing for transparency. “And I was going to explain why we filed such a detailed memorandum of law,” Tipton stated, “but I don’t think I need to waste the court’s time with that.”

The Norfolk County district attorney’s office, which is prosecuting Walshe, has stated that it will share any information relevant to the case, but they will not turn over sensitive information from other ongoing investigations. In a filing, the office noted that releasing Proctor’s phone and work cloud data could expose criminal offender records, confidential informant information, and private data from grand jury proceedings.

Prosecutors have made it clear that they do not plan to call Proctor as a witness in Walshe’s trial. Instead, Cohasset Police Sgt. Harrison Schmidt has taken on Proctor’s role in the investigation. "Dozens" of officers from the Massachusetts State Police and Cohasset Police Department were involved in the case, according to the district attorney’s office, which argues that Proctor’s absence will not impact the trial.

The defense and prosecution are expected to reconvene in December after Walshe’s legal team has reviewed the documents provided by the prosecution.

As the trial approaches, the defense is continuing to build its case, hoping to uncover any signs of bias or misconduct that could impact the outcome of this highly publicized murder case.

  • Judge Denies Robert Telles' Request for Hearing in Jeff German Murder Case
    Oct 3 2024
A Clark County judge has denied convicted murderer Robert Telles’ request for a hearing to explore potential juror misconduct during his trial. Telles, a former Las Vegas politician, was convicted on Aug. 28 of murdering investigative journalist Jeff German in 2022. The jury sentenced him to serve 20 years to life in prison.

Telles’ legal team, led by attorney Robert Draskovich, had filed a motion asking for an evidentiary hearing, citing concerns about the jury's deliberation process. According to the motion, one of the jurors disclosed that the jury had been deadlocked at a pivotal moment in the trial. "We informed the judge that it was 11 to one, we’re a hung jury, and the marshal came back and informed us what the judge said was to keep working,” Juror No. 6 told reporters in an anonymous interview following the trial.

Despite the jury's initial deadlock, they eventually reached a unanimous verdict, finding Telles guilty of the brutal murder of German, who was well-known for his investigative reporting on corruption in Las Vegas, including pieces on Telles himself. German, a seasoned reporter for the Las Vegas Review-Journal, was found stabbed to death outside his home in September 2022.

In his request for a hearing, Telles’ attorney argued that the jury’s deadlock and the judge’s instructions to continue deliberations warranted further examination. Draskovich called for the jurors to be questioned to “clarify, supplement, and protect” the trial record. The defense also raised concerns about comments made by a juror regarding the weather on the day of the murder and the significance of the case for journalism.

However, prosecutors argued that questioning jurors about their internal deliberations would be improper. Citing state and federal laws, they emphasized that jurors' thought processes during deliberations cannot be used to challenge a verdict. “Calling jurors in to discuss this matter at an evidentiary hearing would be improper as it clearly falls within ambit of delving into a juror’s internal thought process at some point of the deliberation,” prosecutors stated in their response.

Judge Michelle Leavitt, who presided over the trial, agreed with the prosecution and denied the request for a hearing. She ruled that there was no legal basis for further inquiry into the jury’s deliberations.

While the jury has already sentenced Telles for German’s murder, Judge Leavitt will still need to sentence him for additional charges, including the use of a deadly weapon and the fact that German was over 60 years old at the time of the crime. Telles’ sentencing on these enhancements is scheduled for Oct. 16.

The case, which drew national attention due to the high-profile nature of both the victim and the accused, continues to resonate, particularly in the journalism community. German’s work had exposed several controversies in Las Vegas, including his investigations into Telles’ misconduct in his role as a public administrator.

Telles maintains his innocence and has vowed to appeal the conviction. However, with the denial of his request for a hearing, his legal options are becoming increasingly limited as he awaits the final sentencing.

  • Sean 'Diddy' Combs Faces New Sex Abuse Allegations From 120 Victims Over 25 Years
    Oct 3 2024
In a shocking development, 120 additional victims have come forward with sexual abuse allegations against rapper and media mogul Sean 'Diddy' Combs. The claims, spanning over 25 years, include disturbing accusations from minors as young as nine, with 25 of the victims underage at the time of the alleged incidents. These new accusations were unveiled by Texas attorney Tony Buzbee, who announced during a press conference in Houston that he is representing the victims. Buzbee revealed that one of the youngest victims, a nine-year-old boy, was taken to an audition with Bad Boy Records in New York City, where he was allegedly abused by Combs and others in exchange for promises of a record deal. "This individual was sexually abused allegedly by Sean Combs and several other people at the studio in the promise to both his parents and to him himself of getting a record deal," Buzbee stated. Founded in 1993, Bad Boy Records helped launch the careers of artists such as Notorious B.I.G., French Montana, and Machine Gun Kelly. Many of the victims claim they were lured by the promise of fame. "Other boys were there to audition as well," Buzbee shared, adding that "all of them were minors." The allegations also describe multiple instances where minors were reportedly abused after being isolated by Combs. "Another minor told allegedly by Sean Combs that he would make him a star, but he needed to visit with him in private about it away from his parents. Once they were in private area, allegedly Mr. Combs made the victim perform oral sex upon him," Buzbee disclosed during the press conference. In response to these allegations, Combs’ legal team has firmly denied the claims. "Mr. Combs emphatically and categorically denies as false and defamatory any claim that he sexually abused anyone, including minors," his lawyer Erica Wolff said. "He looks forward to proving his innocence and vindicating himself in court, where the truth will be established based on evidence, not speculation." Buzbee's law firm has been inundated with thousands of calls since federal prosecutors announced an indictment against Combs last week. The attorney stressed that while some claims have been weeded out as non-credible, at least 120 of the cases will be pursued. Buzbee also mentioned that many victims have medical records that corroborate their claims of being drugged or raped. One of the drugs frequently mentioned is Xylazine, or "tranq," a horse tranquilizer that has appeared in multiple victims' medical reports. Much of the abuse is alleged to have occurred at Combs’ infamous parties, such as his annual "White Party" in the Hamptons, which regularly attracted high-profile guests. "The typical MO at one of these parties...was that when you were handed a drink, and now we know that the drink is laced with something, that if you refused to drink it, you were kicked out of the party," Buzbee detailed, recounting testimony from a victim. In another case, a pregnant woman alleged that after attending a dinner with Combs in Miami, she blacked out and awoke in his bed with serious injuries. "She blacked out, and she woke up in the same bed, again allegedly with Mr. Combs in his mansion in Miami. Her vagina and her anus were torn and sore," Buzbee recounted. The attorney urged other potential victims to come forward, saying, "If you're out there, and you have been victimized, you are not alone. There is a great strength in numbers." Many of the lawsuits, Buzbee noted, will be filed under pseudonyms to protect the victims, primarily in courts in New York City and Los Angeles. As the number of accusations against Combs continues to grow, the spotlight remains on the legal battle ahead, with Buzbee vowing to bring justice to the victims who have come forward. • Former Stoughton Police Officer Loses Certification as His Twin Faces Murder Charges in Sandra Birchmore Case
    Oct 2 2024
William Farwell, a former Stoughton, Massachusetts police officer, has permanently lost his law enforcement certification due to his involvement in a case that has garnered national attention. Farwell entered into a voluntary decertification agreement with the state, effectively barring him from any future employment as a police officer. His decertification will also be added to the National Decertification Index, a database used to prevent decertified officers from obtaining law enforcement positions elsewhere.

Although William Farwell is not facing criminal charges, his twin brother, Matthew Farwell, has been indicted on federal charges related to the death of Sandra Birchmore, a woman both brothers had been romantically involved with. Matthew is accused of strangling Birchmore, who was pregnant, to cover up their affair, which investigators allege began when she was underage. Prosecutors say that after killing Birchmore, Matthew attempted to stage her death to look like a suicide.

Both William and Matthew were officers in the Stoughton Police Department at the time of the events, and investigators have confirmed that both brothers had sexual relationships with Birchmore. According to court documents, William admitted to detectives that he had been in a relationship with Birchmore for approximately two years. This relationship took place when Birchmore was an adult, and William is accused of exchanging inappropriate and graphic messages with her while he was on duty as a police officer.

Court records reveal that William’s communications with Birchmore included explicit content. As outlined in the decertification order, some of the messages exchanged between William and Birchmore contained "photographs and videos of nude individuals having sexual intercourse." The order also detailed that William lied to state investigators during the investigation into Birchmore's death.

When questioned by detectives from the Massachusetts State Police, William disclosed that he had two or three sexual encounters with Birchmore, claiming that the last time they were together was in December 2020. He also stated that during their final encounter, Birchmore informed him that she was pregnant with Matthew’s child. However, phone records contradicted William’s statement, showing that the two met for a sexual encounter on January 10, 2021, just weeks before Birchmore’s death on February 4, 2021.

Sandra Birchmore’s death has sparked significant legal action, as her family has filed a wrongful death lawsuit. The lawsuit names both William and Matthew Farwell as defendants, as well as the Stoughton Police Department. The lawsuit accuses the department of failing to prevent the inappropriate relationships between officers and Birchmore, which eventually led to her death.

As the case against Matthew Farwell progresses, more information is expected to emerge about the Farwell brothers’ actions and the role the Stoughton Police Department played in the tragic death of Sandra Birchmore. This ongoing case has raised serious questions about misconduct within law enforcement and how it is handled when officers are involved in personal relationships that cross ethical and legal boundaries.

  • Suge Knight Makes Shocking Allegations Against Sean 'Diddy' Combs
    Oct 2 2024
Suge Knight, the former CEO of Death Row Records, recently stirred up controversy after making explosive claims about Sean "Diddy" Combs during an interview with Chris Cuomo on News Nation. Knight, currently serving time in prison, joined Cuomo's show via a phone call and shared a series of wild accusations about his longtime industry rival. However, one story stood out more than the others: what Knight referred to as the "hard-boiled egg test."

While it was difficult for Cuomo to keep Knight focused during the interview, this bizarre and unsettling story caught the attention of many. According to Knight, the "hard-boiled egg test" was a humiliating and abusive act that allegedly took place behind closed doors at Interscope Records, a label closely tied to both Knight and Combs during the peak of their careers.

"They would take a boiled egg," Knight explained, "and have those guys pull their pants down and bend over so they could stick the egg up their a--." If the egg cracked, Knight claimed, the perpetrators would "joke" that the person subjected to the test "wasn't ready yet."

Chris Cuomo, clearly disturbed, pushed for more details, stating, "I have never heard of anything like that." However, before Knight could provide further clarification, he veered off topic, leaving viewers with more questions than answers. The disturbing nature of the story sparked widespread discomfort among viewers, with many expressing disbelief over what they had just heard.

In the days following the interview, the internet became ablaze with reactions to Knight's claims. One particular image has resurfaced, adding fuel to the fire: a photo of British comedian Russell Brand holding a hard-boiled egg, standing alongside Diddy. The pair had worked together on the 2010 comedy *Get Him to the Greek,* and the image has taken on new meaning for many in light of Knight's allegations.

Social media users quickly latched onto the photo, drawing connections between it and the "hard-boiled egg test" Knight described. One user commented, "Not you pictured with Diddy holding an egg in your hand, this is getting worse and worse and worse... cuz now all the receipts are coming out." Another joked about the context of *Get Him to the Greek,* specifically a scene where Diddy chases Brand and co-star Jonah Hill, saying, "The scene where Diddy goes crazy & Russell Brand & Jonah Hill are running from him makes sooo much sense now!"

Despite the humor some are finding in the resurfaced image, others are far more disturbed by Knight's allegations. A social media user summed up the unease by stating, "I learned about the hard-boiled egg test today and I wish we had one of those MIB flashy things to just erase that memory, k thanks."

While it's unclear if further information about the alleged "hard-boiled egg test" will ever come to light, Suge Knight’s interview has certainly reignited discussions about the behind-the-scenes culture in the music industry during the 1990s and early 2000s. Whether these claims hold any truth or not, one thing is for sure: the story has captured widespread attention, and the resurfacing of past images has only deepened the intrigue.
