And because we love you guys, we'll even give you a sneak peek at what's coming up in Season 3 (Harry Potter marathon, anyone?).

October Reads and a Deep Dive into "The Pumpkin Spice Cafe"

Hey bookworms, it's Stacey and Rebecca from My Sister's TBR, back again with another episode recap! We've got a stack of October reads to chat about, some unexpected gems, and a few new favorites. But the highlight of today's episode is definitely our deep dive into our featured read, "The Pumpkin Spice Cafe" by Laurie Gilmore. This book was promised to be the perfect blend of cozy and heartwarming, with just a dash of mystery thrown in for good measure. We'll be discussing everything from the characters we loved (and maybe a few we didn't!), to the twists and turns that kept us guessing until the very end.

    Our October Reads

We had a pretty good reading month, with Stacey finishing an impressive (for her) eight books! Christina Lauren's "Something Wilder" provided an adventurous escape, while Jennifer Hartman's "Lotus" offered a dark romance with a surprisingly sweet male lead.

Rebecca finally broke out of her reading rut, thanks to a captivating Hermione and Draco fanfiction recommendation from Stacey. "Sex and Occlumency" offered a delicious dose of Dramione romance, proving that Draco Malfoy is the exception to every rule.

But the reading fun didn't stop there! Stacey also finished "Breath, Mints, and Battle Scars," another Dramione fanfiction that she rated 4.5 stars. This one had her hooked from beginning to end, and she can't wait to share all the juicy details with you.

And of course, we can't forget about Sarah J. Maas! Stacey also finished "House of Sky and Breath," the second book in the Crescent City series, and she's officially obsessed. This series has her in a chokehold, and she can't wait for you to read it so you can freak out over the ending together.

Featured Read: "The Pumpkin Spice Cafe"

Our featured read for October was "The Pumpkin Spice Cafe" by Laurie Gilmore. This contemporary romance follows Jeannie, a city girl who inherits her aunt's beloved Pumpkin Spice Cafe in the small town of Dream Harbor.

We both rated it a 3, and we're on the same wavelength with this one. The insta-love gave us the ick, and the mystery side of it was a bit unbelievable. We didn't really connect with the characters, and the plot felt a little too predictable.

    Looking Ahead

We're excited to announce that November is Harry Potter Fanfiction Month! In the spirit of "Manacled" getting published as "Alchemist," we've chosen another fanfiction that's also getting published: "The Auction" by LovesBitca8. This is another dark one, and we've got high hopes for it.

Our deep dive into "The Hollow Places" was filled with laughter, chills, and thought-provoking insights. We discussed the book's strengths, such as its unique premise and relatable characters, as well as its weaknesses, like the repetitive nature of some scenes. We also touched on the inspiration behind the story, the classic horror novella "The Willows."

  • 2.16. Books in Bloom
    Sep 2 2024

Welcome back to My Sister's TBR! Well, August has been a mad dash of all things book excitement, and we cannot wait to share this month's wrap-up with you. This episode jumps into our recent reads; a surprising new release; and to talk about It Ends With Us by Colleen Hoover-the book and the movie adaptation.

August Reads: A Mix of Emotions and Genres

We have read a total of ten books this month, and let me tell you, the range of emotions we experienced was intense! We kicked off with Me (Moth) by Amber McBride, a haunting yet beautiful YA novel in verse that left a lasting impact. The story, with its themes of mental health and identity, was so powerful that it easily became a contender for our top read of the year.

On a different note, we dived into Lovely Bad Things by Trisha Wolfe, a dark romance thriller that gave us all the spooky vibes. Despite its eerie atmosphere, we found ourselves completely engrossed in the twisted narrative.

Surprise Release: J.K. Rowling’s Hidden Treasure

We couldn’t resist sharing a bit of unexpected book news—J.K. Rowling quietly released two new books, The Wizarding Archive: Volumes 1 and 2. This collection of writings from the Harry Potter universe is packed with 80 articles and anecdotes, answering some of the most perplexing questions fans have had for years. If you’ve ever wondered about the little details in the wizarding world, this might be a treasure trove you don’t want to miss.

Our Featured Read: It Ends With Us by Colleen Hoover

We saved the best (and most emotionally charged) for last. Our deep dive into It Ends With Us by Colleen Hoover brought up so many feelings. This was a re-read for both of us, and the story hit just as hard the second (or third) time around. While we love Colleen Hoover’s storytelling, we also acknowledge the importance of content warnings for readers. This book deals heavily with domestic violence, and it's crucial for readers to approach it with awareness.

For those curious about the film adaptation, let’s just say we have opinions. But we’ll leave the movie talk for our podcast episode—stay tuned!

    Wrapping Up

August was a wild ride of emotions, from heartwarming to heartbreaking reads, and we couldn’t be more excited to see what September brings. Whether you’re into dark romances, YA poetry, or diving back into the wizarding world, we hope our wrap-up inspires your next read.

    Until next time, happy reading!
