  • Résumé

  • Ordhistorier, which means Word Stories, is a podcast that explores the etymology of Norwegian words and their relationship to English and other languages. Whether you're looking to learn Norwegian, a fan of linguistics or a language teacher, Ordhistorier aims to uncover the stories behind everyday words and some of the most tantalising cognates in the Indo-European language family. The podcast is also offered in a video form which features extensive data visualisation, as well as the occasional foray into 3D binaural audio, so I recommend headphones for the best experience.

  • Høst (Autumn) - Ordhistorier [Norwegian Etymology Podcast]
    Nov 9 2024

Why do we go back to school in autumn? What came first, the colour orange or the fruit? Why do Norwegians have potetferie (potato holiday)? In this episode, we're exploring the etymology of Norwegian words associated with høst, meaning autumn. We start with an overview of compound words and discuss why the school year starts in autumn. Then it's words associated with farming and how Norwegian culture begins to adapt to colder conditions, including the history of fårikål. Afterwards, we look at the origins of the colours associated with autumn and end with a trip to the forest and what we might find there. Lærer Marianne, who assisted with fact-checking and suggestions, has her own Instagram page at https://www.instagram.com/stories/nyinorsken If you're learning Norwegian do check it out as she regularly posts tips.
