Oklahoma Basketball Legend Terry Evans | The ROK Podcast with Coach Love

In this episode of The ROK Podcast, Coach Love sits down with Oklahoma basketball legend Terry Evans — a former OU standout, record-breaking sharpshooter, and the most successful 6A high school basketball coach in state history.

Terry takes us back to his roots as a 3X state champion at Millwood High School under the legendary Coach Chop Franklin, where discipline, toughness, and excellence were the standard. Growing up under the guidance of his father, Coach Eddie Evans, Terry learned early what it meant to lead and win.

At the University of Oklahoma, he played under the iconic Billy Tubbs and left his mark as one of the best shooters in Sooner history — finishing his career as OU’s all-time leader in three-pointers made, three-point attempts, and assists.

After his playing days, Terry transitioned into coaching and continued learning from some of the best, including both Billy Tubbs and Kelvin Sampson. As a head coach, he made history with 3 state championships at Midwest City and another at Edmond North, making him the winningest 6A coach in Oklahoma history. He also became the winningest coach in UCO history, bringing a new standard of success and discipline to the program.

  • Ep. 16 - Legend Varryl "Chop" Franklin - 45 Year Millwood Basketball Coach | 20 State Championships
    Apr 19 2025

🎙️ The ROK Podcast with Coach Sean Love proudly presents a legendary conversation with none other than Coach Varryl “Chop” Franklin — the most decorated high school basketball coach in Oklahoma history.

From growing up on the Eastside of Oklahoma City in a strong, disciplined home, Coach Franklin’s story is one of resilience, purpose, and unshakable drive. Though widely known for his basketball dominance, his roots were in football, earning a scholarship to play at the collegiate level. It was during this time, attending a Historically Black College and University (HBCU), that he says he learned how to fight through anything — a lesson that shaped the foundation of his coaching philosophy.

Coach Chop didn’t just win games — he built legacies. With 13 state championships under his belt, he holds the record for the most titles by any high school coach in Oklahoma history. But beyond the banners and trophies, his real impact lies in the hundreds of athletes he’s coached, mentored, and guided to the next level — many of whom have gone on to play college ball and even reach the pros.

This episode is a masterclass in leadership, culture, and legacy from a man who’s seen it all, built it all, and done it all. Whether you're a coach, an athlete, a parent, or just someone who loves the game, you’ll want to tap into this powerful story.

  • Ep. 15 Oklahoma Basketball Legend, Danielle Gant. Talks PC West, Texas A&M, WNBA and Overseas
    Apr 19 2025

On The ROK Podcast with Coach Love, we had the honor of sitting down with Danielle Gant, one of the most dominant basketball players to come out of Oklahoma. From her early days at Putnam City West High School to becoming a defensive force at Texas A&M, Gant’s journey is one of grit, perseverance, and excellence.

    Dominance at Texas A&M
At A&M, Gant thrived under Vic Schaefer, then an assistant coach and defensive guru. She fully bought into the program’s defensive-first mentality, making her one of the most feared two-way players in the Big 12. Her relentless energy and ability to lock down opponents earned her:

    • 2× First Team All-Big 12 (2008, 2009)

    • 3× Big 12 All-Defensive Team (2007, 2008, 2009)

    • Associated Press All-American

    • Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year

    • Only player in Texas A&M history to earn three Big 12 All-Defensive Team honors

Her defensive impact helped build the culture that led to A&M’s 2011 National Championship, proving she was a cornerstone of the program’s success.

    Overcoming Adversity
Despite her college dominance, Gant faced a major challenge after being selected in the second round of the 2009 WNBA Draft by the Chicago Sky. After battling in training camp, she was cut—a tough reality many athletes face. But instead of letting it define her, Gant kept pushing forward.

She took her talents overseas, competing in Turkey and Puerto Rico, where she continued to shine. Her ability to adapt and thrive in different basketball cultures proved her resilience and love for the game.

    Lessons from the Journey
On the podcast, Gant spoke about the mental toughness needed to overcome setbacks. She emphasized the importance of staying ready, trusting the process, and finding success beyond the WNBA. Her story is a powerful reminder that true champions don’t quit—they adjust, keep grinding, and make an impact wherever they play.

Having Danielle Gant on The ROK Podcast was inspiring. Her legacy of dominance, perseverance, and resilience is a blueprint for young athletes chasing greatness.
