  • Episode 7: Truth
    Nov 25 2020
Barbara Kentner’s eventual death after a metal trailer hitch was hurled at her by a passing car reveals deep-seated, racist truths about the city of Thunder Bay, about the country of Canada, and about the dangers of walking down any street as an Indigenous woman or girl. In this, the final teaching, we discover that many still don’t want to face the many truths at the foundation of this tragic story.

  • Episode 6: Respect
    Nov 25 2020
In 1974, Anicinabe Park, in the sleepy town of Kenora, Ontario, was occupied by armed First Nations Peoples from across the continent who refused to leave till their demands were met. At the core of their occupation: a request for recognition and respect. They were tired of ever-present police brutality and their basic human rights being ignored. This is a story you’ve probably never heard of or know much about, but it stands side by side with more famous civil rights movements that happened across Turtle Island throughout the ‘60s and ‘70s.

  • Episode 5: Honesty
    Nov 25 2020
Members of Iskatewizaagegan or Shoal Lake 39 are trying to make an honest city out of Winnipeg. The First Nations community is demanding the city pay up after over 100 years of removing clean drinking water from the lake and shipping it via an aqueduct to the houses, businesses, and buildings in Winnipeg, without any compensation whatsoever. Is it fair to remove water and grow one city at the absolute expense of another community?

Great!

I couldn't put it down. I wanted to keep learning more. Listening to the stories was great so you can hear the correct pronunciation of the truths & teachings. Eye opening. I laughed, I cried & I am angry.

"The Anishinaabe are guided by the Seven Grandfather Teachings—Love, Bravery, Humility, Wisdom, Honesty, Respect, and Truth. In Seven Truths, we explore each teaching through the eyes of Anishinaabe storyteller Tanya Talaga, and through the lives and experiences of people she's proud to know."

Chillingly Beautiful Powerfully Real

I just listened to the first podcast which captivated me immediately with "to know love is to know peace". What a pleasure it is to have the words of Tanya Talaga spoken and so eloquently supported by the teachings, humour and kindness of Elder Sam. As someone who attended residential school at St. Joseph's in Thunder Bay and attended middle school a short distance from Cecilia Jeffrey this podcast brought memories crashing against the shores of my life. I sincerely think that everyone who listens will feel a connection of some sort. Whether Indigenous or not... Chi miigwetch Tanya for continuing to tell the stories and shine the light.

Heartwrenching

This was a beautifully scripted and narrated series told in the voice of people who have experienced injustice firsthand. I find it mind boggling that people....humans....are treated this way in Canada to this day. I grew up in Halifax and saw racism toward BIPOC people every day and did not know how to use my voice. I didn't understand the BIPOC experience. I didn't see the systematic ways our infrastructure perpetuated unfairness and despair. I can see it now and want to do better, and be better. This series interested me as an opportunity to continue the journey of learning about racial and cultural injustice, and what it can do to a people. While I was deeply saddened as I listened, I am so grateful that Tanya Talaga captured the stories so eloquently. Understanding life experiences of our fellow humans is a first step toward equality and can lay the foundation for the steps that are needed to follow. I would highly recommend a listen no matter your background. Listen with heart and without judgement and then ask yourself, like I am doing now, what is my next step.

Essential for everyone

Very well done, very interesting, and filled with heartbreaking truths. Focuses on some of the (many) shocking events that have taken place in Thunder Bay but also discusses Winnipeg water issues and others.

Excellent Series! All Canadians please listen!

I loved this series! Each episode was written and presented so beautifully. If every Canadian, and indeed every Canadian politician listened to the series and sat with this knowledge, we may be able to take our country's first steps at healing our relationship with first people.
Thanks for this Tanya

Powerful Storytelling - like a punch in the gut

This is NOT what I expected based on the description of ‘Seven Truths’ based on the Grandfather’s Teachings- I was expecting something for children about FNMI culture.

Talaga’s work is WAY BETTER. Definitely PG. Not for young children.

Absolutely engrossing discussion of contemporary FN issues, culture & impact of colonialism & systemic racism affecting all aspects of life - education, healthcare, economic, & legal issues framed around current events & told through the lens of a Grandfather teaching (ie Bravery is the focus for education).

Intelligent, articulate & well thought out interviews & information. Brilliant story telling; a must listen for all Canadians.
