Today we hear from Tamika Guishard about how she lets her light SHINE!
Tamika Guishard is an educator and filmmaker.
Guishard is a first-generation Brooklynite from St. Kitts & Nevis based in Queens, NY. With the mind of a (Park) Ranger, heart of a teacher and soul of a dancer, she taught middle school before completing Tisch Graduate Film and cultivating edutainment from Tenement Museum to Leech Lake Reservation and Tribeca Film Institute. Oscar-qualifying festival selections, proofs of concept for her NYU Purple List, feature-length screenplay were shot, written, directed, and co-produced by Black women. She has fellowshipped with Black Women Film! Canada at TIFF, Athena Film Festival’s LA Writers Lab and Residency Unlimited and is one of seven auteurs selected for Writers Guild of America’s coveted NY Screenwriting Fellowship in partnership with FilmNation.
For best pedagogical filming practices and strategic communications, Guishard has been published by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and presented at SXSWedu as well as Center for Education Policy Research for Strategic Data Project. She serves on the Advisory Board of the Tang Institute as well as a team of specialists partnering with DC Office of the State Superintendent of Education (OSSE). The first Black communications professor at Adelphi University, she represents Andover, Schuyler, CUNY, and Penn in addition to her hometown of East New York.
