  • 139 | Professional Soccer Player Civana Kuhlmann: Strength in Vulnerability

    “ I don't really want to be who I was before I was injured. In a lot of ways, I'm thankful to a place that just completely broke me, just brought me to some really low points. That's when I was able to grasp my faith or what it was, which is my personal worth. It has absolutely nothing to do with a soccer field or anything of the sort. Just learning that my worth and my fulfillment comes solely through my faith has been something that will go so much farther through life than soccer ever could.” Civana Kuhlmann started playing soccer at a young age and quickly excelled, consistently playing on the youth national team beginning in eighth grade. From childhood through her sophomore year at Stanford, she faced no serious injuries. But that all changed when she tore her ACL during preseason before her junior year. After surgery, she had to support the team in a whole different way as they reached, and then won, the NCAA championship. After that, Civana went through several additional procedures for her meniscus and hips; she’s now had a total of seven surgeries. Throughout, she faced pivotal moments of learning to advocate for herself in the face of physical pain. As skilled as they are, doctors aren’t inside your body, she points out—athletes must trust their intuition and communicate their needs during recovery. Through her physical and mental setbacks, including the emotional impact of losing her friend Katie Meyer to suicide, Civana learned to redefine herself on and off the pitch. But though she realized her worth had nothing to do with her skills as an athlete, her love for the game persisted. Ultimately, she was drafted into the National Women’s Soccer League, where she’s currently a free agent.   • 138 | Coach Carrie Answers a Question from Josée: Managing Jealousy and Burnout

    “ I have had the worst luck in the last two years. I had a knee replacement in April 2022 for a left knee that had at least 6 scopes over a 10-year + period and it was finally ready to be redone. At last, I would be pain-free. I worked extremely hard to rehab so I could get back on my mountain bike and on the ice. I did, eventually, but with a constant nagging pain. It turns out I had a fungal infection in the joint from the first surgery and now I am facing two major surgeries and possibly another knee replacement after that. I know you have a bunch of podcasts out there with athletes and their stories, but those types of stories don’t make me feel better, they make me feel jealous of their teams of helpers and everything else I don’t have. Maybe I am just so frustrated and tired of hearing about all the happy-ending stories. I know I have to keep positive and put in the work, I just feel exhausted. Rehab has been my sport for two years... any suggestions? This week, we hear from listener Josée about struggling to absorb other athletes’ success stories. Taken the right way, these emotions can serve as messengers, Coach Carrie continues—pointing the way toward an area in which you need more support during your recovery. She also explains the concept of psychological flexibility and how accepting that you’re not always supposed to feel positive can, somewhat paradoxically, make the harder times feel easier to bear.   • 137 | Gymnast and Personal Trainer Mia Lazarewicz: On Identity, Hope, and Humanity

    “ Anybody I've met since I got hurt, I feel like they don't know me and that they can't know me. For people that I've become really close to since I got hurt—it almost hurts me to know that this person won't actually ever know who I am or who I was. They're meeting an entirely different person … there's a before and after, and a massive wall that separates them.” As a seasoned personal trainer and co-owner of Amplify Fitness, a gym in Boston, Mia Lazarewicz is used to helping athletes and adult fitness enthusiasts on the road back from injury. However, little could prepare the lifelong athlete for her own life-altering accident—breaking both legs in a gymnastics flip gone wrong in 2023. In the immediate aftermath, Mia faced uncertainty and anxiety. As the days and weeks wore on, she struggled with shifts in her identity, not to mention the financial repercussions of medical bills and keeping a small business afloat. But though there have been many dark moments, she found joy in striving, humor in her struggles, a deep sense of gratitude for her community, and fulfillment in unexpected endeavors—including writing a book, Becoming a Personal Trainer. And though she still isn’t sure how much of her previous abilities she’ll recover, she’s never short of new goals that keep her striving (up next, maybe: a pull-up competition!).
