  • Dr. Norman Waldrop - Foot & Ankle Surgeon at Andrews Sports Medicine

    In this episode of the "Victory Over Injury" Podcast, presented by Andrews Sports Medicine, Dr. Michael K. Ryan talks with fellow orthopedic surgeon Dr. Norman Waldrop. A board-certified surgeon in foot and ankle surgery, a recipient of numerous academic awards and grants, Dr. Waldrop has published book chapters and peer-reviewed articles, and is an educator and faculty member at the American Sports Medicine Institute, where he trains surgical and non-surgical fellows.

    Dr. Waldrop is a crucial part of the medical teams for The University of Alabama, Jacksonville State University, Samford University, Troy University, Tuskegee University, the University of West Alabama, Birmingham-Southern College and Homewood High School.

    You'll hear what is was like to surgically repair some of the most famous ankles in recent history, including Kenyan Drake, Tua Tagovailoa, and Jaylen Waddle, to name a few.  His energy and wit makes this episode entertaining and enlightening.

  • Cassidy Lichtman - Pro Volleyball Player & Coach, Stanford Univ. & U.S. National Champion

    In this episode of the "Victory Over Injury" Podcast presented by Andrews Sports Medicine, Dr. Michael K. Ryan takes a special deep dive into the life, career and experience of Cassidy Lichtman. An incredibly accomplished individual, who has and continues to overcome pain, she sheds light on how to persevere against overwhelming odds.

    Cassidy is an extremely accomplished athlete, coach, and entrepreneur whose success could have easily been derailed early in life. Yet, she possesses a unique internal force that has allowed her to quiet and overcome a chronic struggle that continues to affect her daily life. By refusing to succumb to an atypical affiliation, and actively choosing to respond with grit, will, optimism and purpose, our guest was named Prep Volleyball High School Junior of the Year and elected to the San Diego Athletic Hall of Fame in 2005.

    She was a four-year scholarship athlete on the Stanford University women's volleyball team, and was selected All-American First Team in 2009 and 2010, and First-Team Academic All-American in 2010. She competed on the U.S. Women's National Volleyball team from 2011 to 2016, making every roster in 2013 on her way to numerous international medals. 

    Cassidy took on coaching in 2016 as an assistant at Stanford and was part of the National Championship team that year. She founded “Play with Purpose” volleyball clinic, which supports the Ronald McDonald House, and recently launched P/ATH (Progress through Athletics) a platform that seeks to position the next generation of athletes for a better world through empathy and empowerment.

    Hunter Kemper is the most decorated U.S. triathlete in history. A 4-time member of the USA Olympic triathlon team, he is one of only two men in the world to qualify for every Olympic triathlon (2000, 2002, 2008 and 2012).  

    Dr. Ryan and Hunter get into what drives Kemper's training, his mental and physical endurance and the challenges he faced competing in the Olympics.

    He served as the host for College GameDay, the network’s Emmy-winning Saturday morning college football preview show, 1990 – 2014. It won the Sports Emmy for Best Weekly Studio Show in 2015, 2014, 2011, 2010 and 2008.  In addition, his tennis workload remains robust, including calling matches for the US Open, Wimbledon and Australian Open as part of ESPN’s start-to-finish coverage of those Majors.

    Over the years, Fowler has also hosted SportsCenter, SportsCentury, horse racing’s Triple Crown races, men’s college basketball including on-site Final Four coverage and the first few editions of the X Games and Winter X Games

    His ability to relate to fans and athletes is effortless, and today we gain some insight to his own struggles with injury, surgery, and rehabilitation.

  • Dr. Lyle Cain - Orthopaedic Surgeon - Sports Medicine

    In this episode of the Victory Over Injury Podcast presented by Andrews Sports Medicine, Dr. Michael K. Ryan takes a special deep dive into the life, career and experience of Dr. Lyle Cain, co-founder and managing partner of Andrews Sports Medicine.

    Dr. Cain is one of the most respected sports medicine specialists in the world, specializing in orthopaedic surgery of the knee, shoulder, and elbow. He has operated on all types of athletes at the highest levels of elite, Olympic and professional competition and is recognized as one of Major League Baseball's "Super Surgeons." 

    Dr. Cain has served as team orthopedic surgeon for The University of Alabama Athletics program since 2000, and was recently honored as the SEC's Team Physician of the Year.  

    A Birmingham, Alabama, native, Dr. Cain received his medical degree from The University of Alabama School of Medicine in 1994.

    Dr. Cain serves on the board of trustees for the American Baseball Foundation and the American Sports Medicine Institute, and is the fellowship director for the ASMI Orthopaedic Surgery Sports Medicine Fellowship. He is responsible for training sports medicine surgeons of the highest caliber.
