NOTE: Regarding my comment on arsenic and cotton fields - I wasn't off base and my brain didn't fail me! (yay) Arsenic was commonly used in cotton production in the southern U.S. as a pesticide to control pests and as a defoliant before harvesting. This practice persisted for much of the 20th century, leaving residual arsenic in the soil. As a result, when these fields are repurposed, or when residential housing tracks are developed over the land, the residual arsenic raises health concerns.
