  • This episode is about the 3/5th clause of the United States Constitution and the myth that surrounds it.

    James Wilson was a founding father and he and James Madison are most responsible for introducing the ⅗ clause at the Constitutional Convention in 1787. Please understand that neither the Northern colonies that were antislavery nor the Southern Colonies that were proslavery ever argued that slaves were not whole people. For tax purposes, the North saw slaves as whole people and for Representation, the South saw them as whole people.
