Non ci ha messo molto, Agatha Raisin, a scoprire che gestire un’agenzia investigativa nei Cotswolds non è esattamente come ritrovarsi in un film noir. Invece di fascinose donne in difficoltà e uomini con impermeabili e fedora, si ritrova a dover trattare con vecchiette cui è sparito il gatto o con ragazzini che scappano con l’auto del padre… Per fortuna (?) però poi è arrivata Catherine Laggat-Brown, ricca, generosa e assai preoccupata perché sua figlia ha ricevuto una serie di minacce di morte.

Quando un’indovina rivela ad Agatha Raisin che il suo destino – e il suo vero amore – si trova nel Norfolk, lei non ci pensa due volte e affitta una casa nel pittoresco villaggio di Fryfam. Ma, non appena arriva, cominciano a succedere strane cose: vari oggetti sembrano scomparire nel nulla e bizzarre luci “danzano” nei giardini e nei cortili. Ben presto iniziano a circolare voci sulla presenza di fate nella zona, ma Agatha non ci bada e, per darsi un tono, inizia a scrivere un romanzo giallo: Omicidio al maniero.

L’agenzia investigativa ha poco da investigare e Agatha Raisin si annoia. È quindi con fin troppo entusiasmo che accetta l’invito di James Lacey, il mai dimenticato ex marito, a trascorrere una vacanza in una destinazione a sorpresa. Peccato che, ad attenderla, non ci sia un romantico hotel affacciato sul Mediterraneo, ma lo squallido e decrepito Hotel Palace di Snoth-On-Sea, nel Sussex, in cui James ha trascorso le estati della sua infanzia.

L’idea della felicità coniugale è rimasta una chimera per Agatha Raisin. Il matrimonio con James Lacey è stato un disastro fin dall’inizio e, alla fine, lui l’ha lasciata… per entrare in monastero. E, per consolarsi, Agatha non ha potuto contare sul suo vecchio amico sir Charles Fraith, perché anche lui, in un certo senso, l’ha abbandonata, dato che è andato a Parigi per sposare una giovane francese.

Si dice che i primi mesi di matrimonio siano i più difficili… e James e Agatha lo possono confermare. Invece di godersi la felicità coniugale, i neosposi vivono in cottage separati e si lanciano accuse reciproche di infedeltà. Quando poi, dopo una lite particolarmente violenta nel locale pub, James scompare, tutti sospettano che Agatha si sia sbarazzata di lui. E a ciò si aggiunge il fatto che Melissa, la presunta amante di James, viene ritrovata morta di lì a poco.

Non è che una piccola agenzia investigativa possa sempre ambire a occuparsi di casi importanti o sensazionali. Per sopravvivere, talvolta bisogna accontentarsi e quindi Agatha deve accettare l’incarico che le affida il ricco e arrogante Robert Smedley, convinto che sua moglie Mabel lo tradisca, benché Agatha detesti occuparsi di divorzi e sebbene Mabel sembri davvero una moglie perfetta, un autentico modello di virtù.

Nel migliore dei casi, un’indagine si chiude con l’arresto del colpevole. Nel peggiore – per Agatha Raisin – con la perdita di gran parte della propria chioma, a seguito di una crudele vendetta. L’imbarazzo è troppo e Agatha decide di allontanarsi da Carsely e fare una vacanza nel villaggio di Wyckhadden, dove peraltro abita una strega che le vende sia un tonico per far ricrescere i capelli sia un filtro d’amore, che Agatha non esita a provare su un locale ispettore di polizia.

Dopo l’abbandono del marito James – che l’ha lasciata per entrare in monastero – Agatha Raisin ha toccato il fondo della tristezza e non si preoccupa neppure di quello che gli altri pensano di lei, quando la vedono senza trucco, infagottata in informi camicioni e con indosso le – prima aborrite – scarpe ortopediche. Ma c’è una luce in fondo al tunnel e ha pure un nome: Tristan Delon. È il nuovo curato di Carseley ed è a dir poco affascinante: capelli biondi, grandi occhi azzurri, bocca perfetta, fisico atletico… In più, dimostra un sincero interesse proprio per Agatha.

But just as Agatha is ready to give up, Smedley is poisoned with weed killer, leaving Mabel, the prime suspect, poised to inherit a fortune.
