Anne of Green Gables is a 1908 novel by Canadian author Lucy Maud Montgomery (published as L.M. Montgomery). Written for all ages, it has been considered a classic children's novel since the mid-twentieth century. Set in the late 19th century, the novel recounts the adventures of Anne Shirley, an 11-year-old orphan girl, who is mistakenly sent to two middle-aged siblings, Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert, who had originally intended to adopt a boy to help them on their farm in the fictional town of Avonlea on Prince Edward Island, Canada.

Anne of Avonlea is a 1909 novel by Canadian author Lucy Maud Montgomery (published as L. M. Montgomery). Anne is about to start her first term teaching at the Avonlea school, although she will still continue her studies at home with Gilbert, who is teaching at the nearby White Sands School. The book soon introduces Anne's new and problematic neighbour, Mr. Harrison, and his foul-mouthed parrot, as well as the twins, Davy and Dora.

Now Anne is sixteen and a half and is about to start teaching at the very same school she hefself attended. Those of you who know Anne will realise that she has always been delighfully, accident prone, falling into scrapes because of her plans and adventures.

The children take center stage in this story, as they befriend the four children of a new minister in tow, John Meredith. After John’s wife died, he has buried himself into theological studies, and lets his children run free. And though the children are generally kind and loyal, the townsfolk only really notice them on the occasions where they’re getting into trouble.

When Marilla and Matthew Cuthbert send for an orphan boy to help around the farm, they get chatty, imaginative Anne Shirley instead. But Anne's warmth and determination soon brighten life in the town of Avonlea.

Anne is adopted by the Cuthberts even after a great mistake at the orphanage. But the frail red-headed young girl stays, even though not wanted at first. She is raised strictly but lovingly by the Cuthberts whose world is set upside down by her wonderful, creative and sometime crazy and eccentric ways. In the end, she gives them endless joy as she grows into womanhood.

Anne leaves Green Gables and her work as a teacher in Avonlea to pursue her original dream (which she gave up in Anne of Green Gables) of taking further education at Redmond College in Kingsport, Nova Scotia. Gilbert Blythe and Charlie Sloane enroll as well, as does Anne's friend from Queen's Academy, Priscilla Grant. During her first week of school, Anne befriends Philippa Gordon, a beautiful girl whose frivolous ways charm her. Philippa (Phil for short) also happens to be from Anne's birthplace in Bolingbroke, Nova Scotia.

Anne has delayed her college ambitions to stay with Marilla at Green Gables after Matthew's passing. But when Marilla takes in a pair of twins, Anne must juggle her responsibilities at home, at Avonlea School, and at the local improvers' society. She rises to the occasion and meets a favorite author and new kindred spirits along the way.

After a trip to London, Anne Blythe learns that a new minister, John Meredith, has arrived in Glen St. Mary. Soon, Anne's six children become friends with the four Meredith children who, having recently lost their mother, have a reputation for running wild. The children all meet and play in a hollow called Rainbow Valley, where they begin to concoct plans for protecting their orphaned friend Mary and finding a wife for the widowed minister. Rainbow Valley was published in 1919 and was the fifth book to feature the beloved protagonist from Anne of Green Gables.
