War looms on the horizon.... After the colonization of Mars and Europa, it took us fewer than five generations to reach beyond our solar system and colonize new planets capable of supporting human life. Power struggles have made a galactic war inevitable, and only an old mail runner, a space pirate, and their ragtag crews can prevent it.

Aramis Reyne is an old space captain, hounded by arthritis and haunted by memories of war. He makes ends meet by running mail and supplies to the farthest, darkest reaches of the system known as the fringe. When Reyne and his ragtag crew salvage a dead ship during one of their runs, they find themselves thrown into a galactic conspiracy involving warship captains, secret organizations, rebels, and pirates. Reyne must confront wartime ghosts and dust off old skills or else he'll watch thousands die, again.

Word of a fringe rebellion has been spreading, but getting recruits to sign up is proving to be a challenge. The Collective Unified Forces has put the colonies in a chokehold, restricting all actions and resources. Cut off from their supplies and potential recruits, Captain Aramis Reyne and his two fellow captains devise a reckless plan for getting the resources they need and building a torrent army. With enemies coming at them from every angle, they soon realize that no one, not even the fringe, wants them to succeed.

There is no turning back from war now. The Fringe Liberation Campaign has sparked protests and rebellions across the Collective. Can the fringe unite into a single front before the Collective Unified Forces send everything they’ve got to destroy the Campaign and kill every last torrent?

The war for independence is on! Parliament has rejected the cease-fire agreement and has declared war on the colonies. Terra is the first to fall, and the torrents are sent running for their lives. The Collective Unified Forces have declared open season on all colonists as they swing a heavy fist across the four fringe worlds. The fight for independence is doomed unless the torrent marshals can turn the odds back in their favor. To stave off defeat, Reyne must reclaim a colony once destroyed by a deadly blight, and Critch must strike at the very heart of the Collective.

The colonies won their independence. But they are not at peace. New enemies come at the fragile Alliance of Free Colonies. Assassination attempts. Kidnappings. Murder. When Aramis Reyne is nearly killed, he turns the tables and hunts the hunters. He learns things are not as they seem. When Critch disappears, he must make an impossible rescue. If Reyne fails, the Alliance will fall. War will claim the colonies once again.
