Welcome to my world. I'm Amal Abdel-Hakim, a 17-year-old Australian-Palestinian-Muslim still trying to come to grips with my various identity hyphens. It's hard enough being cool as a teenager when being one issue behind the latest Cosmo is enough to disqualify you from the in-group. Try wearing a veil on your head and practicing the bum's up position at lunchtime and you know you're in for a tough time at school.

Clinical social worker and psychotherapist Annette Poizner suggests it does: young women will be fascinated to learn about the map of meaning that they harbor within, a map that the unconscious mind builds to manage chaos, an inherent part of reality. Modern-day life can be extremely hectic and stressful for teenagers. We are constantly bombarded by people, and information flows through ever-present access to social media and a hectic pace of life. Social media can be great to get in touch with those close to us, but it can also bring higher levels of stress and anxiety. Mix in school and work stresses and any medical problems, and it can be difficult for modern day teens to cope.
