For two decades, Robert Stone made his living on the high seas, as a diver, fisherman, treasure-hunter - and smuggler. He spent the last 10 of his smuggling years operating in the Niger delta under the most corrupt regime in the world, buying diesel directly from refineries and selling his illicit black cargo to legitimate and illegitimate businesses worldwide. Protected by the military, his smuggling empire made him millions of dollars - until a friend's betrayal and US law enforcement brought it all crashing down.

Brother Mambo is a memoir of an anthropology graduate student who set out to document African cultural influences in the Guianas of South America. His initial study plan blocked by local immigration officials, he followed a hummingbird and other oracles to an Amazonian river and the Pamakans, Africans who had escaped slave plantations in Suriname to rebuild a society in the rainforest.

Tiyo Attallah Salah-El died in 2018 on “Slow Death Row” while serving a life sentence in a Pennsylvania prison. He was a man with a dizzying array of talents and vocations: author, scholar, teacher, musician, and activist: he was the founder of the Coalition for the Abolition of Prisons. He was also, as is apparent from the letters written over a decade and half to his friend Paul Alan Smith that make up this book, an extraordinarily eloquent correspondent.
