After the Reconstruction era, Black people were stuck working for former slave owners on farms and plantations throughout the United States. Although they were technically no longer slaves, they endured harsh and unfair treatment. During the early 20th century, we saw the fruits of our labor come to fruition when Black businesses opened in parts of the country. Black people understood that because of our history and Jim Crow, we could not just work for anyone and expect a fair shake. We had to rely on our resiliency and fighting spirit to persevere.

This book represents the musings of a septuagenarian born and raised in the south and his reflections on the culture and conditions that have led to our current state of affairs in the United States.

He points out that those who are freed cannot be members of society because they are not given the same opportunities. Washington concludes the book with five principles that will aid African Americans in their fight to have equal rights and opportunities.

As women of color, we are scarce in the travel community, and there are several confusions attached to our experience. We feel a sense of pride after every trip. Anytime we step outside of our homes and set out on a new journey, it’s not just to see something beautiful, or to take great pictures for a blog; it’s about changing the reputation of black women everywhere.
