The African-American community represents a paradox of sorts. The residual impact of years of slavery and exclusion from the major institutions of American life are still trenchant. Yet there is hope. As we move forward into a new millennium, our greatest answers can be found by exploring the past.

About 10 years ago, I was working as a security guard assigned to the 11-7 a.m. shift. Once, while on duty, I found myself sitting in my car, looking up in the sky and praying to a higher power about my life. I wanted to be a better man.
