Alchemy Religion

In the “Arcane Lessons,” you have seen that the individual is but a centre of consciousness and force in the great life principle, cosmic will, or spirit. As Aphorism XII has informed you: “There is but One Life and not Many Lives. Separateness is but relative and partial—illusory—the creative fiction of the Cosmos…. In the Cosmic Will there is but One Life in which, and by which, is manifested the Many.”

Roger Bacon was born in England in 1219, and while he is primarily remembered as a philosopher, linguist, educator and scientist, he also spent a fair amount of time exploring the art of alchemy. The Mirror of Alchemy is one of the many texts he produced on the subject during his lifetime.

The Turba Philosophorum, also known as Assembly of the Philosophers, is one of the oldest European alchemy texts, translated from the Arabic, like the Picatrix. It is considered to have been written c. 900 A.D.

This is an ancient alchemy manuscript. Artephius (Artefius) (c. 1150) is a writer and alchemist to whom a number of alchemical texts are ascribed. Alchemical pseudepigraphy makes it difficult to identify who the historical Artephius may have been. His identity remains an open question. As The Secret Book of Artephius was respected and mentioned by Roger Bacon many times, Artephius' writing and alchemy is dated to around 1150.

These true events cannot be explained, and many of these events were witnessed by others who, for the most part, wish to remain anonymous. There are things that can be explained in the real modern world and accepted as fact, but there are some things that remain a mystery or for the most part are ignored as the human rationale for accepting or acknowledging the event that occurred would bend the very fabric of reality - which could leave one in dire straits!

This book having worth enough in itself needs not my commendation, this author in his lifetime being an eminent physician and most able philosopher as the discourse itself can best testify. The author builds on good principles, so that his theory is as true as it is plausible; and I presume he aimed at nothing more, leaving all particulars and their application to the industry of his listeners. He is sometimes pleased to descend to examples, but to such only as are natural, and they indeed are good to teach but hard to imitate. We see not all that nature does.

This treatise deals with the practice of alchemy in medicine, and the use of antimony and lead in particular. Roger Bacon provides the recipe for processing antimony to make the famous red oil of the philosophers. In Bacon’s opinion, this elixir was efficacious against a wide array of afflictions like fever, plague, gout, and leprosy. 

The great mystic Theophrastus Paracelsus (1493-1541) highlighted the medicinal aspects of the alchemical art. Considered one of his most prominent works, The Aurora of the Philosophers (a.k.a. ‘Monarchia’) deals with the ancient history of magic as practiced in Egypt, Mesopotamia, and Persia. It also contains instructions for practical experiments on subjects like the philosopher’s stone, tinctures and transmutation.
