The collection includes legends and stories from Sioux oral tradition, along with an essay titled "America's Indian Problem", which advocates rights for Native Americans and calls for a greater understanding of Native American cultures.

American Indian Fairytales is a collection of Native American folklore retold for children and young adults. Margaret Compton (1852-1903) drew on authentic lore from a wide selection of regions. The tales include "The Story-Teller Himself", "Snowbird and the Water-Tiger", "The Coyote or Prairie Wolf", and "How Mad Buffalo Fought the Thunder-Bird".

This synthesis of Indian-white relations west of the Appalachians from the end of the French and Indian War to the beginning of the Mexican War is not simply a story of whites versus Indians. Indian peoples made some 400 treaties with the United States between the American Revolution and 1871, when Congress prohibited them. They signed nine treaties with the Confederacy, as well as countless others over the centuries with Spain, France, Britain, Mexico, the Republic of Texas, Canada, and even Russia, not to mention individual colonies and states. In retrospect, the treaties seem like well-ordered steps on the path of dispossession and empire. The reality was far more complicated.

The Indian Removal Act of 1830 was the culmination of the United States' policy to force native populations to relocate west of the Mississippi River. The most well-known episode in the eviction of American Indians was the "Trail of Tears" along which Southeastern Indians were driven from their homes in Georgia, Alabama, and Mississippi, to reservations in present-day Oklahoma. But the struggle in the South was part of a wider story that reaches back in time to the War of 1812, back through many states and into the lives of so many tribes who were also forced to depart from their homes.

The Fetterman Massacre of 1866 marked the tragic opening to one of the longest and most dramatic wars in history. Told from the perspective of the gruff Seamus Donegan, this historically accurate tale describes the massacre in vivid detail. At the end of the Civil War, a tremendous stream of soldiers and settlers began moving westward along the Bozeman Trail, cutting deep into sacred Sioux hunting grounds. For Red Cloud and his warriors, a bloody fight to retain their ancestral homeland proved inevitable.
