Born a slave in Maryland, Harriet Tubman knew first-hand what it meant to be someone's property; she was whipped by owners and almost killed by an overseer. It was from other field hands that she first heard about the Underground Railroad which she traveled by herself north to Philadelphia. Throughout her long life (she died at the age of 92) and long after the Civil War brought an end to slavery, this amazing woman was proof of what just one person can do.

Opal Lee grew up as a Black girl in Texas at a time when Black and white people were kept separate and Black people had fewer opportunities than white people did. A big part of her work and life was making Juneteenth a national holiday to mark the end of enslavement for Black Americans. Women didn’t always have the rights and the possibilities that they do today. In the past, the basic human rights such as the right to vote, the right to reproduce, the right to work, to hold public office, to enter into legal contracts, to have equal rights in family law, the right to education, the right to be free from sexual violence, the right to own property, and so on were not available to women.

Bethany Johnson Veney (c. 1813-1916), was born into slavery in Shenandoah County, Virginia. Her memoir, also called Aunt Betty's Story, chronicles her early life and experiences. After obtaining her freedom, she settled in Rhode Island.
