It's a scorching hot summer in Pleasant Creek, Indiana, but the temperature isn't the only thing that's boiling. Everyone's on edge, including Liz Eckardt and her quilting group, the Material Girls. Pleasant Creek, Indiana, loves its history. Each summer the town sponsors Heritage days, a festival commemorating the signing of Pleasant Creek's original town charter. Ettie's sister, Florence Lapp, is in trouble. Her house has burned down, and her gun is missing. When Florence announces she's staying with Ettie and Elsa-May until the case is solved, Ettie is spurred on to make that happen, and fast. Events take a more serious turn when the gun shows up and is linked to a murder. Ettie finds out that Florence has some odd friends, and one of them has been charged over the shooting. Florence insists her friend is innocent even though the DNA evidence proves otherwise.

Warning: Before you even consider listening to this, understand that this is a story about a guy that is large, feels he is in charge, and is ready to kick some butt. In truth, he is essentially deaf, almost blind, socially handicapped, and has little sense of smell to boot. Add to that his basic disregard for proper attire and you have one humorous, heartfelt, and, at times, moving story. Okay maybe not that heartfelt or moving, but it may all depend on how you look at things.

Karson had almost by chance become a detective, and due to his extensive knowledge of the Amish community he was much in demand. Internal conflict and bad memories cloud his judgement, yet his sixth sense just kind of kicks in on this clean, short mystery. Will his past prevent him from helping solve this case, or can he rise above it all to serve the community, even if he is unsure if he loves it or despises it?
