Ancient Poetry

"Les Fleurs du mal", in english "The Flowers of Evil" is a volume of French poetry by Charles Baudelaire. First published in 1857 it was important in the symbolist and modernist movements. The poems deal with themes relating to decadence and eroticism. Baudelaire dedicated the book to the poet Théophile Gautier, describing him as a "parfait magicien des lettres françaises" ("a perfect magician of French letters").The author and the publisher were prosecuted under the regime of the Second Empire as an "outrage aux bonnes mœurs" ("an insult to public decency").

Paul Verlaine est l'auteur d'une poésie empreinte du romantisme du XIXème siècle, mais dégageant déjà une originalité qui fera de lui l'un des initiateurs du symbolisme. Sa poésie, entre ombre et lumière, aux vers parfois torturés, s'inspire notamment d'une vie agitée par sa passion pour Arthur Rimbaud.

Alongside Baudelaire, Mallarmé, and Rimbaud, with whom he had a stormy relationship, Paul Verlaine is one of the most influential poets of the "fin de siècle". He was one of the greatest representatives of the Decadent movement that began in the 1870s, and a leader of the "Symbolists". His stylistic innovations brought a new musicality to French poetry; it was he who paved the way for modern poetry with its experiments in free verse and new techniques.

Contrairement aux imitateurs qui ne faisaient que caricaturer grossièrement Aristide Bruant, Paulo du "lapin Agile" est entré réellement dans l'esprit des textes et a appris à les dire à la grande satisfaction du chansonnier qui l'a reconnu comme "son seul élève". Après cette passation, Paulo transmit tout naturellement le témoin à son beau fils Yves Mathieu. Connaissant les textes sur le bout des doigts, Yves a apporté à l'œuvre de Bruant son propre son, sa verve, sa force de conviction et son amour de la langue.

Les textes qui composent cet enregistrement, pièces de théâtre, poèmes, et extraits de recueils, choisis par l'auteur, sont autant de jalons dans cette difficile conquête. "'L'incessant' met en présence un homme et une femme qui s'affrontent avec âpreté. Cet homme et cette femme sont en chacun de nous. À certains moments de crise, ils se déchirent, nous harcèlent. Mais la décision qui clôt le débat n'est jamais définitive. À tout instant elle peut être remise en cause. Alors l'affrontement recommence."
