Anglican bishop John R. Sperry spent 20 years with the Inuit in a tiny and isolated Canadian Arctic community. Sperry traveled on his rounds by dogteam, across the sea ice and snow-covered land, to visit Inuit camps.

While much of church planting today is approached as an innovative new effort, church leaders can take comfort in the truth that they are simply stewards of what the faithful church has been doing for millennia. By rediscovering the foundations of our heritage, we are able to build healthier, more faithful, and more effective churches. The Church is very good at saying all the right things about racial equality. But the reality is that the institution has utterly failed to back up these good intentions with demonstrable efforts to reform. It is a long way from being a place of Black flourishing.
