يستطيع حاتم المُصاب بكهرباء في المخ زرعَ الأفكار في عقل غيره والتحكُّم في الأشياء وتحريكها من مكانها، تتطوَّر حالته ليبدء بزرع الذكريات وإيهام أصحابها بأنَّها حدثت فعلاً! لكنَّ حادث تصادم أوتوبيس راح ضحيته الكثير من الأشخاص من ضمنهم حاتم، حرَّك الكثير من القصص والأحداث.

تعيش كيا كلارك في عزلة بإحدى المناطق النائية من كارولينا الشمالية، بعد أن هجرها الجميع. هجرت أمها البيت فتبعها إخوتها وتركوها ضائعة مع أبيها السكير، وهي في العاشرة من عمرها. لذا فضلت الهروب والعزلة على الحياة وسط مجتمع يتنمر عليها ويؤذيها، وقررت البقاء وحيدة في الأحراش، لتكن الطبيعة الأم هي أنيسها ومعلمها الوحيد.

الجبال ليست مجرد أماكن للقمم والجليد والمغامرات، بل هي أيضًا طريقة حياة: متى نترك مسافة، ومتى نتراجع، ومتى نتقدم ومتى نلتزم الصمت. قال أحدهم: لا ينبغي لنا أن نترك لأطفالنا الإنجازات والأحداث التي غيرت التاريخ فحسب، بل يجب علينا أيضًا أن نسجل لهم تلك القصص اليومية، تلك التفاصيل الصغيرة التي تشرح لهم كيف عشنا.

ينهي خوف المتمرد على مجتمعه مغامراته، التي خاضها في الجزء الأول من الرواية، يعود إلى حياته الطبيعية بحثًا عن الهدوء والاستقرار، لكن ذلك الهدوء لا يدوم طويًلا.

في القصص التالية سوف تقابلون جميع أنواع المخلوقات الليلية؛ مصَّاصي دماء، وعُشَّاق الشياطين، و"بُعْبُع" يعيش في الخزانة، وكافَّةَ أشكال الرُّعب الأخرى. لا شيء منها حقيقي. وذلك الشيء الكامن تحت سريري في انتظار أن يمسك كاحل ساقي هو أيضًا غير حقيقي. أنا أعلم ذلك، كما أعلمُ أيضًا أنني إذا حرصتُ على إبقاء ساقي تحت الأغطية، فلن يتمكَّن أبدًا مِن إمساك كاحلي.
