El título de este capítulo abunda en la terminología ampliamente aceptada de arquitectura "isabelina" y "plateresca". Se trata de presentar los últimos esplendores del gótico flamígero en la Península, que coinciden en lo sustancial con el llamado "estilo Isabel", y el proceso de incorporación de elementos formales renacentistas, de procedencia italiana, que da origen al denominado "estilo plateresco".

The Book of Tea (1906) by Okakura Kakuzō is a long essay which examines the role of chadō (Teaism) in the aesthetic and cultural aspects of Japanese life. The author explains Teaism as “a philosophy founded on the adoration of the beautiful among the sordid facts of everyday existence”. Originally written in English for a western audience, the essay deals with the spiritual traditions of Zen and Taoism, as well as the secular side of tea in Japanese life.

Nos encontramos ante un producto artístico plena­mente oriental. El problema de que los árabes no fueran creadores de formas artísticas propias no resta mérito alguno a su labor. Las soluciones arquitectónicas por ellos adoptadas habían sido empleadas por persas y bizantinos desde muchos siglos atrás, pero lo cierto es que sólo los árabes lograron hacer de este arte un arte universal.

No se puede hablar del arte románico sin haber pa­seado antes un poco por los pasillos del feudalismo. La aristocracia feudal del Medievo es la clase social creadora del arte románico, tanto en sus manifestacio­nes religiosas como civiles. El románico fue un arte esencialmente religioso, pero también feudal, aristocrático. Los altos clérigos y abades medievales tenían los mismos intereses políticos y económicos que la nobleza.

Entendemos por arquitectura barroca un estilo de construcción y decoración característico, que comienza a instalarse en Europa a finales del siglo XVI y perdura sin trascendentales variaciones hasta la segunda mitad del XVIII. El siglo clave, pues, del arte barroco es el XVII. Las fronteras exactas de este modo arquitectónico no pueden determinarse, pues, aunque tradicionalmente venía concediéndose a Lorenzo Bernini la paternidad simbólica del estilo, la historiografía actual descubre antecedentes barrocos en hombres de tanta importancia como Miguel Ángel.

La arquitectura del noroeste comprende las zonas de Galicia, Asturias, León, Zamora, Salamanca y Cáceres. Esta división es puramente convencional, pero no refleja una auténtica división de estilo con respecto a las anteriores (pirenaica y castellana). Sin embargo, se puede observar cierto aire singular en las obras de esta zona que falta en las anteriores, aunque podremos anotar muchos detalles que sólo son reflejo de las tendencias románicas generales del Camino de Santiago.

Tras la muerte de Almanzor (1002), los reinos leonés y navarro, a los que pronto se va a unir el castellano, se aprovechan de la mala situación política y militar en que navegaba el califato y avanzan impetuosamente hacia el sur. Es la época de Sancho el Mayor, de Fernando I, de Alfonso VI, reyes que favorecieron ampliamente la entrada de las corrientes culturales francas en sus reinos.

Era totalmente forzoso dividir esta serie en dos grupos, dada la ingente cantidad de obras -todas ellas importantes- que la arquitectura barroca tiene en nuestra patria. Quizá este hecho puede ser la mejor demostración del auge, la importancia y la autenticidad del estilo barroco, pese a todas las críticas y prejuicios negativos.

Dentro de los estilos que rodean los últimos años del siglo XIX sólo uno merece la calificación de original: el modernismo catalán, exaltado en la figura de Antonio Gaudí. Esta manifestación va a ser, como es natural, el vértice y piedra de toque de la selección presente. Pero en la misma época construyen en España muchos otros arquitectos representantes de tendencias nacionales o importadas que no podíamos dejar marginados a la hora de presentar una visión completa de la arquitectura española.
