In silent films and World's Fair postcards, nothing said "San Francisco" more than its soaring clock tower. But as acclaimed architectural critic John King recounts, the rise of the automobile and double-deck freeways severed the city from its beloved structure. The Book of Tea (1906) by Okakura Kakuzō is a long essay which examines the role of chadō (Teaism) in the aesthetic and cultural aspects of Japanese life. The author explains Teaism as “a philosophy founded on the adoration of the beautiful among the sordid facts of everyday existence”. Originally written in English for a western audience, the essay deals with the spiritual traditions of Zen and Taoism, as well as the secular side of tea in Japanese life.

Era necesario un capítulo intermedio para ilustrar el período de transición entre el Gótico y el Renacimiento. El título de este capítulo abunda en la terminología ampliamente aceptada de arquitectura "isabelina" y "plateresca". Se trata de presentar los últimos esplendores del gótico flamígero en la Península, que coinciden en lo sustancial con el llamado "estilo Isabel", y el proceso de incorporación de elementos formales renacentistas, de procedencia italiana, que da origen al denominado "estilo plateresco".

No vamos a tener, a partir de 1920, arquitectos geniales que creen algo impensado, pero sí van a surgir muchos constructores con ganas de reformar lo antiguo y de introducir una nueva sensibilidad estética en la pálida y enfermiza arquitectura española. Como el número de obras y de autores se multiplica por momentos y en la mayoría de los casos falta perspectiva suficiente para valorar la obra de los más recientes, hemos decidido hacer una selección provisional, que en ningún momento pretende ser canónica.
