Arctic Sea

In the aftermath of a world war with China, Admiral Dan Lenson is assigned to set up a US Navy base on the rugged North Slope of Alaska, in response to Russian seabed claims that reach nearly to the US coast. Yet the current administration seems oddly reluctant to confront Russian aggression. At the same time, the International Criminal Court is accusing Dan of a war crime.

Between 1941 and 1945, more than eight hundred shiploads of supplies were delivered to the Soviet Union protected by allied naval forces. Each journey was a battle against the elements, with turbulent seas, extreme cold, and the constant dread of torpedoes. These Arctic convoys have been mythologized as defenseless vessels at the mercy of deadly U-boats—but was this really the case?

In 1914, fear and paranoia rule the high seas. Iain Cosgrove sets sail for a research trip aboard the last of Dundee’s once-grand sealing fleet. Fueled by rum and the eerie tales of the crew, they obsess over ancient superstitions, which Iain dismisses as simple lore...until they reach the frigid Arctic seas. Soon, Iain begins to question his beliefs. But none of them are prepared for what they are about face in the frigid, dark waters of the north.

I juli 2009 blev lastfartyget Arctic Sea kapat på svenskt territorialvatten i Östersjön. Brottsfallet -- som hämtat ur en deckare - väckte naturligt nog stor internationell uppmärksamhet. Serien av händelser slutade först en knapp månad senare i närheten av den Västafrikanska kusten, där de ryska myndigheterna bordade fartyget och grep kaparna. Fallet var speciellt också beträffande det omfattande internationella myndighetssamarbetet. För utredningen av kapningen av fartyget och det försök till grov utpressning som var förknippat med den, bildades en gemensam internationell utredningsgrupp.
