During the real estate crash of the late 2000s, Christopher Brown purchased an empty lot in an industrial section of Austin, Texas. No se puede hablar del arte románico sin haber pa­seado antes un poco por los pasillos del feudalismo. La aristocracia feudal del Medievo es la clase social creadora del arte románico, tanto en sus manifestacio­nes religiosas como civiles. El románico fue un arte esencialmente religioso, pero también feudal, aristocrático. Los altos clérigos y abades medievales tenían los mismos intereses políticos y económicos que la nobleza.

Era totalmente forzoso dividir esta serie en dos grupos, dada la ingente cantidad de obras -todas ellas importantes- que la arquitectura barroca tiene en nuestra patria. Quizá este hecho puede ser la mejor demostración del auge, la importancia y la autenticidad del estilo barroco, pese a todas las críticas y prejuicios negativos.

Como resultado directo de la conquista de la Península Ibérica por las legiones romanas, la romanización se inicia desde el primer momento, se acentúa durante el Imperio, o sea, desde el año 19 a. de J.C. en adelante, y se completa, por influjo del Cristianismo, en los siglos III y IV de nuestra Era.

Ya hemos afirmado en distintos capítulos que el arte gótico es el estilo de la clase burguesa de la Baja Edad Media. Sin embargo, en España no hubo una verdadera burguesía más que en Cataluña y Levante. En los reinos centrales la aristocracia y las Ordenes monásticas monopolizaron la casi totalidad de la riqueza. Sólo en el Principado de Cataluña existe una clase social de negociantes, armadores y artesanos que va tomando auge a medida que avanza la Edad Media.

Entendemos por arquitectura barroca un estilo de construcción y decoración característico, que comienza a instalarse en Europa a finales del siglo XVI y perdura sin trascendentales variaciones hasta la segunda mitad del XVIII. El siglo clave, pues, del arte barroco es el XVII. Las fronteras exactas de este modo arquitectónico no pueden determinarse, pues, aunque tradicionalmente venía concediéndose a Lorenzo Bernini la paternidad simbólica del estilo, la historiografía actual descubre antecedentes barrocos en hombres de tanta importancia como Miguel Ángel.
