The editor of the book, Ariel Raimundo Choi, was born in Argentina and is still a citizen of Argentina; therefore, he considers himself a Hispanic-Korean-American. Ye One Chung grew up most of her life in Israel, so she considers Israel as her home. She writes a part of her autobiography in modern Hebrew, a language Ye One Chung is fluent at.

Prisons and Patriots provides a detailed account of 41 Nisei (second-generation Japanese Americans), known as the Tucsonians, who were imprisoned for resisting the draft during WWII. On September 15, 1924, Martha Lum and her older sister Berda were barred from attending middle school in Rosedale, Mississippi. The girls were Chinese American and considered by the school to be “colored”; the school was for whites. This event would lead to the first US Supreme Court case to challenge the constitutionality of racial segregation in Southern public schools, an astonishing thirty years before the landmark Brown v. In Eyes of the Storm, Roksana Badruddoja explores the perceptions of second-generation South Asian-American women about daily social practices in the U.S. and how they view themselves in comparison to broader American society. She accomplishes this by engaging in a year-long feminist ethnography (in 2004) with a cross-national sample of twenty-five women in the U.S., spending a day in the life of each woman eating, drinking, and talking about work, partners, families, food, clothing, and how they feel about being children of immigrants, among other things. The research on which Eyes of the Storm is based explores the meaning of national belonging (and lack of belonging) for a group of "second-generation" South Asian women in America. Here, Badruddoja focuses on both the conceptual and theoretical perspectives of the social, economic, cultural, aesthetic, and political dimensions of transnational migration, which includes the effects of population circulations and demographic change (community formation, segregation, and integration).

This is by far the best introductory book on Korean-Americans in the market and will be very useful for use in classroom settings.

This book of autobiographies by Korean middle-school students is something that is needed for Korean studies and Korean-American studies, in my opinion. Because this book contains our voices, this book is very powerful. In a sense, we are documenting our own history. Because our lives are like the lives of other middle-school students who are Koreans, I believe that this book contains an important history for everyone who listens to this book.
