Having bipolar disorder can make simple tasks feel like climbing mountains. There are many aspects to the illness that can we can overcome. There are important areas of our life such as fitness, money, and triggers that need to be addressed. Not only do I have bipolar disorder but I am also a family member with people with bipolar disorder. Not only do I live with bipolar disorder, I also understand the issues we face and how to solve them. We have our good days and bad days just like anyone else.

Over the course of human history, there have been countless tomes composed on the subject of mental health and an equally daunting number on the joys and perils of raising children. If you factor in the mysterious nature of twins and the long-term ramifications of being raised in a cult, however, then it’s basically this one and Harry Potter. If it helps, our story is shorter and contains fewer owls. Bisection is the story of one man, two children, and bipolar disorder.

Being diagnosed with bipolar disorder was like losing my flight plan. It was as if my destination and alternate airports had disappeared. My engines were on fire during the height of my first full-blown manic episode and I was certain that a crash was imminent. An emergency was declared. To my surprise I learned that I had on board with me the love and support of family and friends. In the end I landed safe and sound, just not where I had intended. I was never able to make a career out of flying. Having worked four commercial pilot jobs as a flight instructor and charter pilot, I now know that those years were the beginning of unrecognized signs and symptoms of bipolar disorder. I was too restless to stay at one job long enough to be truly prepared for the next.

Bipolar is a term that is often referenced colloquially to describe someone with mood swings in any given setting, but the clinical reality of this disorder is something quite different altogether. While it has become commonplace to use terms describing mental illness in a way that only aims to align them with one notable trait, the diagnoses themselves are often expansive in a way that is not always easy for a person who has not experienced them to understand.

A little over a year of living with bipolar type one. I ended a year off of medications deeply in love and with a stay in jail for joy-riding and fleeing and eluding. My family suffered, my friends suffered, and I suffered. This is a journal starting after my stay in jail.
