Martha Howald grew up on a farm, and she loved spending time with her dad. Even when he was loading manure onto a spreader, there she'd be with a little pitchfork, doing her part to clean up the mess from the cows and hogs. In fourth grade, she was thrilled when her older brother returned home from the army and started dating her favorite teacher - Miss Hill. The two would end up getting married, and Martha couldn't have been happier. Join Martha as she recalls funny moments, challenges conquered, and lessons learned over a life that's been not-so politically correct.

This book is a tribute to all the strong women in my life. I wanted to also make the rest of the world aware of this mouth-watering cuisine that hails from the land of Piacenza in Northern Italy. This lineage of inspiration began with my great-grandmother, Maria. Her unending determination despite great odds enabled her to open a restaurant. The recipes that were born through that establishment were enhanced through the generations that followed, and continue to satisfy the many palates of various family members and friends.

Mary I, perhaps best known by the moniker Bloody Mary, was England’s first female monarch who ruled in her own right. A fighter from birth, she was the only surviving child of Henry VIII and his wife, Catherine of Aragon. Mary would make her way back to her father’s good graces after being cast out by him in favor of his numerous wives and would eventually undo her father’s religious reforms by restoring Roman Catholicism in England. The fourth Tudor to rule England, Mary is remembered for burning around 300 Protestants at the stake on her quest for religious reform.
