The Boxcar Children are going to college! That is, they are going to Mountvale College to help Grandfather at a convention of young astronomers. The Aldens learn many interesting things, and get to look at the stars and planets through a telescope at the observatory. But then some valuable information disappears - along with one of the students at the convention. What's going on? It's another mystery for the Boxcar Children!

The Aldens are helping their grandfather organize Greenfield's Winter Festival. When the Boxcar Children get a roll of photos developed, they find a secret message hidden in one of them. They are baffled, and things become even more mysterious when they realize that someone is trying to ruin the Winter Festival by tearing down the decorations and stealing a local statue! There must be a connection between the message and everything that is going wrong.

While on the beach at a seaside resort, Benny finds a bottle with a tattered piece of paper inside. When the Aldens find out that it’s part of a map that leads to a pirate’s riches, they prepare to search for the buried gold. But the Aldens aren’t the only ones looking for the hidden fortune. The Aldens are so excited when they get to meet other ballonists, learn how hot air balloons work, and even help the crew launch a balloon. Then, things start to go wrong.
