This is Volume III of Barking Mad British Traditions and Sports. Volumes I and II have been well received so I thought I'd write another follow-up with this third volume in the series. I hope you will be glad I have. Inside you will hear about 20 more of the most crazy, silly, and of course, barking mad things we British do to have a bit of fun and keep ourselves occupied. We are known for our eccentricity - here's some proof!

In days gone by, the good old English pub was a much different beast than it is today. A wide variety of pub-based games were played and inter-pub competition was very popular. However, with the passing of time and the advent of the Internet, the traditional pub games scene is on the wane.

The sudden rise and fall of Great Britain should not have come as a surprise to those few persons who study the increase and fall of empires, and they are acquainted with the lands which, in every single case, have caused their dissolution. No writer who controls a heart can, however, afford to go through the fall of Britain merely with all the eye with the moralist or perhaps the calm historian. I would, therefore, remind my listeners of the wealth which the British Empire enjoyed in her quest to conquer the world.

We're living in some incredibly dark and strange times, but whatever coronavirus throws at us, it's failed to dent the great British spirit. Near the end of the 19th century, Otto von Bismarck, the German chancellor, brought the plenipotentiaries of all major powers of Europe together to deal with Africa's colonization in such a manner as to avoid provocation of war. This event, known as the Berlin Conference of 1884-1885, galvanized a phenomenon that came to be known as the Scramble for Africa.

William Stukeley's study of Stonehenge from 1740 is a classic in the field. Stukeley, a fellow of the Royal Society, was a conservationist who complained about the way Stonehenge was treated by landowners and tourists. The book includes his accurate drawings that are still being used by scholars today.

Accounts of the Second World War usually involve tales of bravery in battle, or stoicism on the home front, as the British public stood together against Fascism. The Burman policy of carrying off every boat on the river, laying waste the whole country, and driving away the inhabitants and the herds, maintained our army as prisoners in Rangoon through the first wet season; and caused the loss of half the white officers and men first sent there.

Spying and treachery are as much a part of warfare as weapons and death. This has always been the case since the earliest battles and is not likely to change in the future. Some historians have called the Seven Years’ War the first true world war, and they make a good point. Focusing on day-to-day life in port cities held by the British Army, Johnson recounts how men and women from a variety of backgrounds navigated harsh conditions, mitigated threats to their families and livelihoods, took advantage of new opportunities, and balanced precariously between revolutionary and royal attempts to secure their allegiance.
