It argues that MI5 acted with neither statutory authority nor statutory powers, and with no obvious forms of statutory accountability. It was established as a counter-espionage agency, yet was beset by espionage scandals on a frequency that suggested if not high levels of incompetence, then high levels of distraction and the squandering of resources.

Dr. Harold Shipman is one of the most prolific serial killers in history. He was convicted of 15 murders, but is believed to have killed nearly 250 of his patients by overdosing them. His victims were mainly elderly people. Despite several clues, including a warning to the police from a funeral home about the doctor's behaviour, Shipman was able to commit his murders undetected for years. It was only after a patient's daughter raised objections to her mother's will that the full extent of Shipman's crimes came to light.

Dennis Nilsen was both a serial killer and a necrophile, who killed at least 12 men. Many of them were homeless and homosexual. Dennis Nilsen would keep the bodies of his victims in his apartment for weeks, just for the sake of company. His first victim was a boy of just 14 years old. He was finally arrested when a blockage of the sewage system in his house was caused by some body parts of one of his victims.

Ian Brady and Myra Hindley are responsible for the murder of five children – after sexually assaulting and torturing them. The couple was initially convicted of three murders, later they confessed to two more. The body of one victim, Keith, has never been found. Ian Brady was declared insane in 1985, while Myra was repeatedly called the most evil woman in the UK.

Peter Sutcliffe – a.k.a The Yorkshire Ripper – brutally attacked 20 women, of whom only seven survived. He managed to evade the police for several years until he was arrested for having a fake license plate on his car. After two days of interrogation, he confessed to being the Yorkshire Ripper.

Robert Black was hunted down in Scotland where he had kidnapped, sexually assaulted and murdered three young girls from the ages of 4 to 11. But before graduating to murder, he abused many children. Black may also have been responsible for several other unsolved child murders in Britain, Ireland and Europe between 1969 and 1987. His murders led to the largest police manhunt ever to take place in Great Britain.

Fred West is said to have murdered at least 12 people, some of them together with his wife Rose. The victims were buried in the basement and garden of their home, which became later known as the House of Horrors. The couple tortured and even killed their own daughter. How it is possible that they have could commit their horrible acts for such a long time, even after several warnings to the authorities about the circumstances in the family, remains a question till this day.

What made 1939 the watershed year was the release of several critically acclaimed movies, including The Wizard of Oz and Mr. Smith Goes to Washington. But the most famous of the bunch, and perhaps the most famous movie of all, is Gone With the Wind, and one of the most remarkable aspects of the film is that the quintessential Southern belle was played by Vivien Leigh, a British actress still relatively unknown in Hollywood.
