Burmese History

Flying the notorious "hump route" between India and China in 1943, a twin-engine plane suffered mechanical failure and crashed in a dense mountain jungle. Among the passengers and crew were celebrated CBS journalist Eric Sevareid, a Soviet double agent posing as an OSS operative, and General Joseph "Vinegar Joe" Stilwell's personal political adviser. Against the odds, all but one of the 21 people aboard the aircraft survived - but they fell from the frying pan into the fire.

With the exception of the terrible retreat from Afghanistan, none of England's many little wars have been so fatal in proportion to the number of those engaged as our first expedition to Burma. The Burman policy of carrying off every boat on the river, laying waste the whole country, and driving away the inhabitants and the herds, maintained our army as prisoners in Rangoon through the first wet season; and caused the loss of half the white officers and men first sent there.

Inspired by actual events. Suffering from the later stages of Alzheimer's, Captain Tom “Winkle” Brown is a retired RAF test pilot and World War 2 veteran approaching his century year. When 36 pristine Spitfires are discovered buried deep within the Burmese jungle, he gets a surprise visit from Grant Global Industries, with a most intriguing proposition.
