On October 12, 2005, a massive fire broke out in the Wines Central wine warehouse in Vallejo, California. Within hours, the flames had destroyed 4.5 million bottles of California's finest wine worth more than $250 million, making it the largest destruction of wine in history. The fire had been deliberately set by a passionate oenophile named Mark Anderson, a skilled con man and thief with storage space at the warehouse who needed to cover his tracks.

Richard Milhous Nixon was the United States' 37th president, serving from 1969 to 1974. Nixon, a Republican politician, formerly worked as the 36th vice president from 1953 to 1961, after rising to country prominence as a California agent and senator. Following the Watergate occurrence, he ended up being the only president to leave from office after five years in the White House that observed the end of the Vietnam War, détente with the Soviet Union and China, the first manned moon landing, and the starting of the EPA.

In The Lives of Michel Foucault, David Macey quotes the iconic French philosopher as speaking “nostalgically...of 'an unforgettable evening on LSD, in carefully prepared doses, in the desert night, with delicious music, [and] nice people'". Gruesome California is a collection of true-life stories, most of them rescued from old newspaper accounts that were published over 100 years ago.
