The speckled hen laid twelve eggs in her hidden nest at the top of the hay pile in the barn and the very last one, whom she called Humpty Dumpty, was the largest of all. The nest was very crowded and so the eggs began kicking each other to get more space for themselves. Humpty Dumpty, being on the very edge of the next, was kicked completely out and then decided to look about the wide world to see what he could see.

If you have ever enjoyed The Gruffalo, you might be amused by this fan homage to that wonderful work. If you haven't, do that first. The Gruffalo is for children zero to five years old. Buffalo Tiger is for six year olds and up. Both works are quite short and ultimately based on a Chinese folk tale about a fox and a tiger. Buffalo Tiger offers a solution to a special challenge of rhyming with "tiger" and adds a few nuances along the way. It invokes the world of insects, whereas The Gruffalo narrates from the world of larger animals.
