A century ago, Europe's diplomats mismanaged the crisis triggered by the murder of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria and the continent plunged into World War I, which killed millions, toppled dynasties, and destroyed empires. Today, as the 100th anniversary of the Great War prompts renewed debate about the war's causes, scholars and policy experts are also considering the parallels between the present international system and the world of 1914. Are China and the United States fated to follow in the footsteps of previous great power rivals?

China’s economic, technological, and military hyperpower has reached an all-time high. This power is based upon decades of intense government spending, military build-up, cyber and intellectual property breaches of other sovereign nations—foremost the US and its allies—and a hegemonic dictator for life Xi Jinping yielding unparalleled control, comparable to the era of Mao Tse Tung.

The People’s Republic of China and the United States are today at war. It is being fought with the use of information, politics, and finance. The Chinese believe that, as in all war, it would be better to win without engaging the enemy on the battlefield or having to resort to the likes of nuclear weapons if it can be avoided. To achieve this, China has engaged in a decades-long campaign to manipulate and corrupt America’s ruling elite.
