While the Civil War is mainly remembered for its epic battles between the Northern and Southern armies, the Union was simultaneously waging another campaign - dubbed "Anaconda" - that was gradually depriving the South of industry and commerce, thus rendering the exploits of its field armies moot. The Battle of Second Manassas was part of the Northern Virginia campaign under Confederate General Robert E. Lee’s leadership and unfolded during the summer of the second year of the American Civil War. The battle played out on the same ground as the Battle of First Manassas, which took place almost a year before, and both engagements revealed startling similarities, including Confederate victories. Drawing upon ex-slave interviews conducted during the 1930s and 1940s by the Works Project Administration (WPA), Dr. Herbert C. Covey inventories many of the herbal, plant, and non-plant remedies used by African American folk practitioners during slavery.
