This landmark treatise by the great economist Henry George was first published in 1879. George's work became the seminal analysis of the political economy which inspired most, if not all, the prominent thinkers of the Progressive Movement and many others of great influence: Upton Sinclair, John Dewey, George Bernard Shaw, Friedrich Hayek, H. G. Wells, Clarence Darrow, and Leo Tolstoy, to name but a few. His analyses and proposals are referred to as "Georgism".

David Ranney’s vivid memoir describes his work experiences between 1976 and 1982 in the factories of Southeast Chicago and Northwest Indiana. The audiobook opens with a detailed description of what it was like to live and work in one of the heaviest industrial concentrations in the world. The author takes the listener on a walk through the heart of the South Side, Chicago, observing the noise, heavy traffic, the 24-hour restaurants and bars, the rich diversity of people on the streets at all hours of the day and night, and the smell of the highly polluted air.

Der Traum einer Gesellschaft, in der jeder die gleichen Chancen hat und ohne materielle Sorgen sein Glück suchen kann, ist vorbei. Die Schere zwischen Arm und Reich klafft in Deutschland immer weiter auseinander. Die breite Mittelschicht, die einst unser Land gekennzeichnet und unsere Gesellschaft getragen hat, erodiert. Die Krisen der letzten Jahre haben diesen Trend verstärkt und die Politik will oder kann nicht gegensteuern.
