"Ein Fall geschickter Täuschung" (A Case of Identity) erschien erstmals im September 1891 im Strand Magazine und wurde im Jahr darauf mit 11 anderen Fällen in Die Abenteuer des Sherlock Holmes veröffentlicht. Die junge verzweifelte Mary Sutherland wendet sich an Sherlock Holmes. Am Tag ihrer Heirat verschwand ihr Verlobter Hosmer Angel spurlos, nachdem er ihr kurz zuvor das Versprechen abgenommen hatte, sie würde ihm treu sein, was auch immer geschehe.

"Die verschwundene Braut" (The Noble Bachelor) erschien erstmals im April 1892 im Strand Magazine. Noch im selben Jahr wurde der Fall in Die Abenteuer des Sherlock Holmes veröffentlicht. Handlungszeitpunkt: Oktober 1886: Lord Robert St Simon, der zweite Sohn des Herzogs von Balmoral, sagt sich brieflich für den Nachmittag bei Holmes und Watson an. Aus den Zeitungen rekapitulieren sie, dass sich der 41jährige am Vortag mit Hatty Doran, der einzigen Tochter eines US-Millionärs aus San Francisco, verheiraten wollte.

In Dr. Watsons Praxis erscheint sehr früh am Morgen der knapp 25jährige Hydraulik-Ingenieur Victor Hatherley, der in der Nacht einen Daumen verloren hat. Da er von einem Mordanschlag spricht, schaltet Watson umgehend Holmes ein. Ihm berichtet Hatherley, dass ihn gestern in seinem miserabel laufenden Laden ein ungewöhnlich dünner Mann mit deutschem Akzent aufgesucht hat, der sich als Oberst Lysander Stark ausgab.

"Skandalgeschichte im Fürstentum O... "(Originaltitel: "A Scandal in Bohemia") ist eine Erzählung des britischen Schriftstellers Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, die erstmals im Juli 1891 im Strand Magazine erschien. Es handelt sich hierbei um die erste Erzählung, die Doyle mit den Figuren Sherlock Holmes und Dr. Watson schrieb. 1887 und 1890 hatten die beiden Romane "Eine Studie in Scharlachrot" und "Das Zeichen der Vier" das Fundament für den Hauptkanon der Sherlock-Holmes-Erzählungen gelegt.

Musketererne er blevet ældre, og Frankrig ser anderledes ud end under deres tidligere eventyr. Den onde kardinal Mazarin er død, og Louis den 14. er Frankrigs ubestridte hersker. Historien tilldrar sig I London kring tiden för förra sekelskiftet, när det fanns gott om lömska bovar och spännande miljöer. I ett övergivet hus på Brixton Road hittas en mördad man och mördarjakten tar vid. En jakt med egendomliga förgreningar till mormonernas Utah i USA.
