Classic Gothic Literature

Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu (1814-1873) was born in Dublin, Ireland and is acknowledged as an influential writer in the genre of gothic and supernatural fiction of the 19th century. Many of his short stories were originally published in various magazines. Here are six of them: “The White Cat of Drumgonnial”, “Dickon the Devil”, “The Drunkard's Dream”, “The Secret of the Two Plaster Casts”, “The Vision of Tom Chuff”, and “An Authentic Narrative of a Haunted House”.

Mary W. Shelley (1797-1851)Mary Wollstonecraft Godwin nació el 30 de agosto de 1797 en Londres (Inglaterra). Era hija única del filósofo William Godwin y la escritora feminista Mary Wollstonecraft. Mary creció y se educó en un ambiente intelectual y progresista, que marcaría fuertemente su personalidad.

Mary Shelley, recien salida de la adolescencia fue la companera del celebre poeta ingles Percy Shelley, con quien se fugo a Suiza, a pesar de estar el casado. Cuando su esposa se suicido, los dos amantes contrajeron matrimonio. En una reunion, a la que asistio Byron, este ultimo propuso que cada uno escribiera una historia de horror y la joven sorprendio a todos cuando llego con la historia de "Frankenstein, o el moderno Prometeo", un clasico de la literatura de horror.

Il giovane Victor Frankenstein, dopo aver acquisito conoscenze mediche e dopo aver studiato i fenomeni che riguardano il corpo umano post-mortem, realizza il suo sogno, regalando vita a una creatura dall’aspetto deforme e con una forza immane, formata unendo parti di corpi morti. Il rifiuto da parte del suo creatore suscita l’ira incontenibile della creatura.

The Castle of Otranto is regarded as the first Gothic novel. The son of Manfred, Prince of Otranto, is mysteriously killed on his wedding day by a huge helmet. The event leads to a fast-paced story of jealous passion, intrigue, murder, and supernatural phenomena unfolding in an atmosphere of thunderclaps, moonlight, and dark castle walls, mirroring the inner turmoils of the characters themselves. Horace Walpole's tale, an immediate success when it first appeared in 1764, is a classic of its genre.

Edgar Allan Poe's early literary works were poetic, but he quickly turned to prose. He worked for several magazines and journals till in January 1845, The Raven was published and became an instant classic. Poe was also an early proponent of the detective story and announced his entry to this genre with the classic short story 'The Murders in the Rue Morgue'.
