Northanger Abbey was the first of Jane Austen's novels to be completed for publication, though she had previously made a start on Sense and Sensibility and Pride and Prejudice.

A young governess arrives at Bly, a country home in Essex, England, to care for Miles and Flora, two precocious and pure children. But as ghostly visions take shape, the obsessively protective governess soon fears for the safety of her wards - only to wonder if these hauntings are a conjuring of her own imagination.

"Il castello di Otranto" è il primo vero romanzo gotico; tipico anche l'artificio di far passare il romanzo come una traduzione da un manoscritto italiano; artificio che poi fu lasciato cadere nelle edizioni successive alla prima, del 1764. L'idea che sottosta all'opera è l'intenzione di unire il romanzo storico al romanzo di fantasia; di fatto la storia della vita di Manfredi di Sicilia ha ispirato alcune parti della trama.

I tre racconti che compongono "Il diavolo nella bottiglia" appartengono alla serie di racconti polinesiani, scritti quando Stevenson, minato dalla tisi, si era trasferito definitivamente nelle isole Samoa. Affascinato dall'esotismo del paesaggio e dal carattere della popolazione locale, lo scrittore ne riproduce i tratti caratteristici in una narrazione che unisce ai toni della favola la forte connotazione morale che aveva contraddistinto le sue opere precedenti.

"Il giro di vite", strepitoso capolavoro dell'horror ottocentesco, inaugura la collaborazione tra LA CASE Books e Vir la Forza delle parole. Una storia di enorme potenza evocativa e di grande attualità, tanto da aver ispirato la seconda stagione di "Hill House", l'acclamata serie TV prodotta da Netflix. Bly Manor, villa cupa e decadente, è lo scenario in cui si muovono Flora e Miles, due piccoli orfani di 8 e 9 anni. La villa in cui vivono però è infestata da oscure presenze, presenze che la loro giovane istitutrice riesce ad avvertire grazie al suo "sesto senso".

Il romanzo, scritto nel 1881, è ambientato nel 1864 in un luogo non ben precisato, sulle rive di un lago lombardo. Il Palazzo è invece la villa Pliniana, sul Lago di Como, visitata da Fogazzaro, la cui atmosfera cupa si adattava all'ambientazione del romanzo. Il libro fu ignorato dalla maggior parte delle riviste letterarie ma lodato da Verga, che lo definì una delle più belle concezioni romantiche mai apparse in Italia. Ne fu realizzato un film famoso nel 1942. Cornice musicale di Franz Strauss: notturno n. 7.

Questo romanzo, pubblicato nel 1851, viene presentato dall'autore come "romance" e non come romanzo. Così l'autore mette le mani avanti e si permette di spaziare nelle fantasie suggerite dalle novità dei suoi tempi: il mesmerismo, lo spiritismo, l'idea, insomma che potesse esistere il modo di comunicare con esseri disincarnati e che essi potessero influenzare gli eventi della nostra vita.

Northanger Abbey fu il primo romanzo di Jane Austen ad essere pubblicato anche, se in precedenza erano già state stese delle versioni di Orgoglio e pregiudizio e di Ragione e Sentimento. Il suo titolo originario, Susan (nome della protagonista che fu poi mutato in Catherine) fu rivisto per la stampa dalla Austen nel 1803, e venduto ad un editore che decise poi di non pubblicarlo.

Wuthering Heights is Emily Bronte's only novel. Written between October 1845 and June 1846, Wuthering Heights was published in 1847 under the pseudonym "Ellis Bell"; Bronte died the following year, aged 30. Wuthering Heights and Anne Bronte's Agnes Grey were accepted by publisher Thomas Newby before the success of their sister Charlotte's novel, Jane Eyre.

Il monaco è il primo e più famoso romanzo gotico. Scritto nel 1796, raccolse un enorme successo, ma creò anche un notevole scandalo per i suoi contenuti: castelli, abbazie, fantasmi e, soprattutto, violenze, stupri, incesti; fra i suoi personaggi troviamo addirittura l’Ebreo errante, e Lucifero in persona. L’autore pubblicò quindi una versione più accettabile nel 1798, in cui i contenuti scabrosi hanno un intento più dichiaratamente morale, rendendolo ispiratore di numerosi altri romanzi (si pensa che anche Manzoni vi si sia ispirato).
