Classic Mystery Short Stories

Edgar Allan Poe's early literary works were poetic, but he quickly turned to prose. He worked for several magazines and journals till in January 1845, The Raven was published and became an instant classic. Poe was also an early proponent of the detective story and announced his entry to this genre with the classic short story 'The Murders in the Rue Morgue'.

Three interrelated stories make up the plot of The Suicide Club. They each stand on their own, but there is an overall plot that brings them together. It centers around the hero, Prince Florizel of Bohemia. He attempts to solve the mystery of a strange club that turns out to have a very different purpose than its name suggests.

Mark Twain is at his irreverent best with this hilarious parody of the 19th-century mystery. The tale begins with the murder of Flint Buckner and a heinous crime against a young woman. A man with special gifts - no less a personage than Sherlock Holmes! - enters the scene to solve the mystery and avenge the lady. "Die Sängerin" ist eine Kriminalnovelle von Wilhelm Hauff, die zuerst 1826 erschien. Sie handelt von der Aufklärung eines Mordversuchs an einer jungen Sängerin durch den sie behandelnden Arzt. Auf die italienische Sängerin Giuseppa Fiametti wird ein Mordanschlag verübt. Am Abend vorher soll sie sich auf einer Redoute mit einem maskierten Herrn unterhalten haben, mit dem sie dann auch den Ballsaal verließ. Über die Vergangenheit und den Lebenswandel der jungen Dame sind schon bald in der Kleinstadt unschöne Gerüchte im Umlauf. Medizinalrat Lange geht der Sache nach und stößt auf eine Menge Ungereimtheiten.

August Gottlieb Meißner war nicht nur Jurist oder Begründer der deutschen Kriminalerzählung im 18.Jahrhundert, sondern er war auch Professor für antike Literatur und Verfasser dicker historischer Bücher über England. Die hier vertonten 10 Justizgeschichten stammen aus der Feder von Henry Fielding, dem Autor des "Tom Jones" und sehr viel berühmteren Pendant zu unserem Meißner. Sie sind übersetzt in eine reiche deutsche Sprache und glänzen ebenso wie die Vorgänger aus dieser Reihe in Originalität und Frische.

Die Kriminalgeschichten dieser Folge enthält nur eine (große) Erzählung. Der Einblick in den Alltag und ins Innenleben des Protagonisten "R." ist intensiv und detailreich. Die schiefe Bahn ist bereitgelegt und wird auch prompt genutzt. Meißner kommentiert: "R. scheint mir ein merkwürdiges Beispiel zu seyn, wie unsäglich schnell der Weg des Lasters bergabwärts geht; oder vielmehr: welche, im hohen Grade böse, That selbst derjenige begehen, - wisentlich begehen kann, der immer noch nichts weniger als ein eigentlicher Bösewicht ist."

Dies sind keine ausgedachten Abenteuer oder Novellen. Dies ist alles tatsächlich so geschehen. Hier sind Menschen wie du und ich. Und das ist ein großer Vorteil. Aus Gerichtsakten destilliert, mit Sinn und Kenntnis bearbeitet und in gutes schönes Deutsch gebracht. Diese Geschichten waren Instrumente der Aufklärung. Erstmalig in der deutschen Literaturgeschichte werden die sozialen Umstände von Tätern und Opfern diskutiert. Jene Helden der Ermittlung gab es damals (spätes 18. Jahrhundert) noch nicht. Keine Kommissar-Duos, keine Sheriffs. Nur Gerichte und ihre Diener.

"In der ganzen Geschichte des Menschen ist kein Kapitel unterrichtender für Herz und Geist als die Annalen seiner Verirrungen." Das ist der erste Satz aus Friedrich Schillers Erzählung Der Verbrecher aus verlorener Ehre, die gemeinhin als erster deutscher Krimi gilt. Er selbst aber schreibt, er habe darin das Meiste August Gottlieb Meißner zu verdanken.

Francis Marion Crawford, an only child, was born on 2nd August 1854 at Bagni di Lucca, Italy. He was a nephew to Julia Ward Howe, the American poet and writer of "The Battle Hymn of the Republic". Crawford was educated at St Paul's School, Concord, New Hampshire, and then on to Cambridge University, the University of Heidelberg and the University of Rome. In 1879, he went to India, to study Sanskrit and then to edit The Indian Herald. In 1881, he returned to America to continue his Sanskrit studies at Harvard University.

Hunted Down is a detective story by Charles Dickens. The astute Sampson suspects that a certain Mr. Julius Slinkton who turns up in his office one morning is not all that he seems. Holmes, employing his trusty magnifying glass quickly determines that a mysterious third man may be responsible for the crime, unraveling a thread involving a secret criminal past, thwarted love, and blackmail.
