Zum ersten Mal in ihrem Leben erwacht Maja mitten in der Nacht durch das Zirpen einer Nachtgrille. Es ist Vollmond und die Sterne funkeln wunderschön. Am Rande eines Baches sieht Maja einen Blumenelf aus einer Wasserlilie schlüpfen und ist vollkommen überwältigt von dem Anblick. Da Maja das erste Wesen ist, dem der Blumenelf begegnet, soll ihr liebster Wunsch erfüllt werden. Zuerst traut sich Maja nicht, ihren Wunsch auszusprechen, aber dann fasst sie all ihren Mut zusammen.

In der Rinde der Kiefer, in der Maja ihre Sommerwohnung hat, wohnt der Borkkäfer Fridolin mit seiner Familie. Durch ihn erfährt Maja vom gefährlichen Specht, der mit seiner langen klebrigen Zunge in den Spalten der Baumrinde sein Futter einfängt. Da kommt plötzlich ein spinnenartiges komisches Tier den Baumstamm hochgeklettert. Maja ist erstaunt und ängstlich zugleich.

Am nächsten Tag ist Maja noch ganz ergriffen von der letzten Nacht, in der sie endlich die Menschen kennenlernen durfte. Sie fliegt durch einen Wald und kommt schließlich am Rande eines goldenen Kornfeldes an. Dort begegnet sie einem interessanten Käfer mit sieben Punkten.

Maja ist inzwischen zu einer starken und erfahrenen Biene herangewachsen. Manchmal ist sie von Heimweh geplagt und sehnt sich nach der Gemeinschaft ihres Bienenvolkes. Doch der Wunsch, den Menschen kennenzulernen, ist stärker. In der folgenden Nacht bahnt sich dieser Wunsch seinen Weg.

Maja reist mit dem Blumenelf durch die Nacht, um endlich ihren geliebten Menschen zu begegnen. Was sie am Ende ihrer Reise zu sehen bekommt, übertrifft all ihre Erwartungen.
