Classic Noir

When a disheartened and broke Mr. Cole boards a ship, the Lady Jermyn, in Australia for a return to England, he little knows what is in store for him. Love, disaster and loss enfold him on the journey home. Once there he is followed, threatened and befriended. A strange series of events make him doubt his sanity before he discovers the secret of the Lady Jermyn and what really happened.

"Bartleby, the Scrivener: A Story of Wall Street" is a short story by the American writer Herman Melville, first serialized anonymously in two parts in the November and December 1853 issues of Putnam's Magazine, and reprinted with minor textual alterations in his The Piazza Tales in 1856. A Wall Street lawyer hires a new clerk who, after an initial bout of hard work, refuses to make copy and any other task required of him, with the words "I would prefer not to".

The dark strains of madness that permeate many of the works of Edgar Allan Poe make their way through this macabre story. This memorable short story bears a resemblance to Poe's Tell Tale Heart. In both stories guilt leaves a murderer with a singular choice.

Charles Marlow is a steamboat captain on the River Thames near Gravesend, England. He and his crew work for an ivory trading company. One day he recounts to his fellow crew the story of his life and how he became a captain for the steamboat company. The focus of his story involves the journey Marlow undertook to the outer reaches of the company's operations. Here he tells of his wild encounters with Mr. Kurtz, a man with a great reputation for bringing in the most ivory for the company.

Questo thriller ci porta in una storia di spionaggio ambientata sulla costa del Norfolk, e alla vigilia della grande guerra. Il libro fu infatti scritto nel 1914. Come negli altri romanzi dell'autore, il noir è sempre accompagnato da tocchi di rosa, e non è mai truce o angosciante.

Questo autore di thriller racconta di un'investigatrice che, non contenta di rispondere alla piccola posta di una rivista femminile, entra in contatto con la malavita londinese, forse spinta da motivi sentimentali. Ma non aspettatevi un romanzetto giallorosa, anche se potreste essere ingannati dal tono brillante: il noir è in agguato dietro ad ogni strada, come può capitare a Londra.

Jack Kerouac tells the story of Jack Duluoz, a French-Canadian boy growing up in Kerouac’s own birthplace, the dingy factory town of Lowell, Massachusetts. There, Doctor Sax, with his flowing cape, slouched hat, and insinuating leer, is chief among the many ghosts and demons that populate Jack’s fantasy world. Deftly mingling memory and dream, Kerouac captures the accents and textures of his boyhood in Lowell in this novel of a cryptic, apocalyptic hipster phantom.

A Manhattan gumshoe pursues a convict to St. Louis, where he gets mixed up in a cop killing and nearly loses his own life at the hands of a B girl.
